Cheryl transforms as she makes West End debut in 2:22 – and reviewers are loving her
Cheryl was all smiles following her West End debut at the Lyric Theatre in London on Sunday night, with one audience member calling it a “fever dream" on social media.
The former Girls Aloud singer took to the stage for the first time in 2:22 A Ghost Story after the show began 30 minutes late.
Cheryl plays the lead role of Jenny, which was previously played by Laura Whitmore, Lily Allen and Giovanna Fletcher, who is convinced that her house is haunted.
While hosting a dinner party, Jenny convinces her husband Sam and their friends to stay up until 2:22 to seek out the noises.
Following the show, Cheryl left the theatre in a burgundy turtle neck and a pastel blue coat as she was guided to her car by security.
Despite having no prior stage experience, Cheryl looked in high spirits as she exited the venue and was also snapped flashing a smile for photographers.
“The producers know this will get everyone talking, but it will ruffle feathers,” a source previously told The Sun of Cheryl’s casting.
"Most stage actors have trained their entire lives to get where they are, so seeing someone with little or no experience land a top billing can be a stab.”
While the official opening for the public and critics is February 1, with the former cast carrying on performances at the Criterion Theatre until Jan 8, early reactions are starting to emerge on social media.
One person wrote: "Fair play to Cheryl, she more than held her own on opening night of Ghost Story 2:22."
Another said: "I honestly felt like I was living a fever dream watching a ghost story starring Cheryl in her west end debut. I honestly really enjoyed the show and our Chezza smashed it, and the whole cast are great. What a night!"
"Omg. That was awesome. Cheryl you were fab (so were you all) Thoroughly enjoyed,” a third added, as fourth chimed in: “2:22 A Ghost Story was absolutely packed to the brim on opening night to see Cheryl. I had no expectations and she did a good job."
A source previously told OK! that the Love Machine singer, who recently met up with one of her bandmates over Christmas, is looking to use the stage performance to reinvent herself.
They explained: “Cheryl wants to reinvent herself in 2023. She was on TV all of the time, she was the sweetheart of the nation. But she stepped back for a while to focus on being a mother.
“She’s excited to be coming back. Some things haven’t worked out in the past that she’s tried, but this is a very exciting time for her. She’s wanted to get back on the scene for a while.”
