Dale Meeks’ brother says he was ‘unwell and let down’ before death
Actor Dale Meeks tragically died aged 48 due to heart failure on April 22.
His brother Philip announced the cause of the Emmerdale star’s death on Instagram in an emotional statement, writing: “The little boy I grew up with has left me. I cared for him so deeply.
“I tried so desperately to help him. It will say heart failure on the death certificate.
“Dale was profoundly unwell and unable to cope and undiagnosed conditions in men in their forties are killers.”
“Dale was let down by those who should have seen beyond his ability to act and recognise his pain.”
He concluded: “I will never get over his death.”
Philip also confirmed that he would be collecting donations for the Mind, the mental health charity, in memory of his brother.
Dale portrayed the character Simon Meredith in Emmerdale between 2003 and 2006.
He also starred in the BBC teen drama series Byker Grove, which launched the careers of presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly.
Dale played Greg, the leader of a gang from the rival youth club Denton Burn.
Dale’s brother-in-law, Nick Boaden, also shared to Facebook: “So much less to laugh about now you’re not there to share it with. (sic)
“Thanks everyone for all the beautiful messages and memories you have been sharing.”
Many fans mourned the loss of the television star with comments such as: “’Goodbye my friend”, “I’m heartbroken by your loss” and “RIP Dale great actor in television and theatre”.
Celebrities including Ant and Dec also shared their condolences to their former co-star.
They wrote on Twitter: “He was the loveliest of guys, even though he was a Denton “Burner”, the arch nemesis of the Byker “Grovers”!”

Meeks appeared on TV in the The Hunt for Raoul Moat on the week of his death, playing Moat’s friend Rory Sutcliffe.
The actor had retweeted posts about the three-part drama, which explored the horrific shooting spree by Raoul Moat, 37, in 2010.
Some fans have speculated about whether the actor’s last Twitter post was a reference to his deteriorating health.
While watching the show, he shared an image of the back of a blue door with the signs Room 9 and Male.
He penned: “Superb article. Sadly watching tonight’s episode from this equally mysterious and sinister location.”
Dale was also known for winning the celebrity version of Stars in Their Eyes alongside Mark Charnock, where they appeared as the Blues Brothers.
He also showcased his singing talents in the West End production Love Never Dies and the musical Chicago.
Dale later appeared in the series Casualty, Inspector George Gently and the Tracey Beaker spin-off, The Dumping Ground.
