“Contrary to speculation, whilst I met the man when he was a teenager and was asked to help him to get into television, it was only after he started to work on the show that it became more than just a friendship. That relationship was unwise, but not illegal. It is now over.”
He added: “I am painfully conscious that I have lied to my employers at ITV, to my colleagues and friends, to my agents, to the media and therefore the public and most importantly of all to my family. I am so very, very sorry, as I am for having been unfaithful to my wife.”
ITV has since has instructed Jane Mulcahy KC to carry out a review to establish the facts surrounding Schofield’s departure, including looking into the statement he made when he agreed to leave This Morning.
She will also review ITV’s records around the investigation into allegations of an affair when they first surfaced in 2020 and talk to those involved.
The review will also assess ITV’s processes and policies and whether they need to be changed or strengthened.
It comes as ITV bosses are set to face questions from MPs over the scandal.
Meanwhile, Phil shared his wife’s reaction and told The Sun she was “very, very angry” after he confessed to her about his affair with a younger ITV colleague and said he had previously denied rumours about the affair to her when she had asked.
His exit comes after several reports of a rift with his This Morning co-star Holly Willoughby.
