BBC celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 97th birthday

Sir David Attenborough turns 97 today.

To celebrate, the BBC has dug deep into the archives to create a special film for the legendary broadcaster.

Clips from the natural historian’s incredible career have been pieced together in the 97-second offering – a second for every year.

The long-standing television favourite is seen as a young man, alongside snapshots from the current day.

It kicks off with Sir David using binoculars on set and flashes back and forth between archive footage and more modern documentation.

He is seen alongside all manner of creatures, including a rhino calf and sloth, before releasing turtle hatchlings and getting up close to an orangutan.

The staggering places he has visited across the world take centre-stage, from deserts and idyllic beaches to being metres away from an active volcano as well as icy waters.

Sir David is seen talking to Greta Thunberg and accepting an award, as well as various pieces of interview footage are included.

The final shot sees him wishing a feathered friend “good luck”, while sitting on the cold floor with a torch around his head.

It comes after Sir David previously shut down any possible rumours of retirement.

He previously told The Sun: “How long do I plan to keep going? As long as I’m vertical and people ask me to do it.

“It’s a marvellous time, why would I suddenly say, ‘Don’t bother’?”

The star added: “I see no reason whatsoever why I can’t live past 100. Earth has enough wonders to make more than three ‘Planet Earth’ series.”
