David Letterman says Tom Cruise ‘should have been’ at 2023 Oscars ‘celebrating his big jet-pack Maverick show’

David Letterman called out Tom Cruise for missing Sunday’s Academy Awards while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday, questioning why the A-list movie star was absent on his industry’s biggest night.

The 75-year-old entertainment legend asked, ‘Here’s something that may be a little sensitive: Tom Cruise – where was Tom Cruise?’

Kimmel said that event organizers didn’t ‘know where Tom Cruise was,’ but were told that he wouldn’t be able to attend due to ‘production issues.’

Letterman pushed back, saying, ‘What does that mean? That’s nonsense, that’s nonsense.’

Kimmel replied, ‘Exactly, it’s very non-specific, but we have no idea what happened.’

Letterman said that Tom Cruise ‘should have been there, celebrating his big jet-pack maverick show,’ in reference to the smash-hit Top Gun: Maverick, which wound up winning one Oscar for Best Sound amid six nominations.

Both suggested might have been an explanation for his absence was that he didn’t think he was going to win an award.

While Cruise was not nominated for Best Actor at the show, he was a part of the group of nominees for Best Motion Picture of the Year as a producer on the sequel to his 1986 hit.

The Indianapolis native said, ‘Between you and me, he should have been there, right?’ to which Kimmel agreed, calling Cruise ‘the Prince of Hollywood.’

Letterman praised Kimmel, saying the strong feedback and ratings for the show spoke ‘more to the power of [his] success’ without Cruise’s star power helping light up the room.

‘If Mr. Big Shot was not there, the show was still never more successful – nice going, Jimmy,’ Letterman told the ABC stalwart.

Cruise did not attend in order to avoid a potentially-awkward encounter with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, a source told DailyMail.com earlier this week, adding, ‘Tom was not there because she was there, and he did not want a run-in.’

Cruise was seen in London earlier this week at a dinner for actor Michael Caine’s 90th birthday.

Letterman made his first appearance in Kimmel’s Los Angeles theater, three days after Kimmel hosted the event for the third time, putting up strong ratings and keeping the show on track a year after Will Smith’s infamous slap of Chris Rock.

He congratulated Kimmel for successfully hosting the show a third time.

‘This was a sensational moment for the country and the network and yourself,’ Letterman said. ‘You know what this makes you, don’t you? You are the Prince of Hollywood. 

‘Congratulations, because you resurrected this carcass, and the network and the Academy ought to be very grateful, nice going.’
