Harry Styles on Building "Trust and Safety” With ‘My Policeman’ Costars Emma Corrin and David Dawson

There has been, to put it mildly, a lot of buzz around both of the Harry Styles movies that are coming out this fall. And last night, the world finally got to see My Policeman in its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In the film, Styles plays Tom, a closeted gay police officer in the UK in the 1950s. He meets Patrick (David Dawson), a museum curator who is much more in touch with his sexuality, and they start a relationship in secret. Then Tom meets Marion (Emma Corrin), a friend of his sister’s, who he sees as the perfect person to act as a cover-up so he and Patrick can continue their relationship. Through multiple perspectives, the film unravels how the choices the characters make in their twenties alter the rest of their lives.

After the premiere, the cast came on-stage for a (very) brief Q&A, which the moderator joked about being so short because “some people have flights to catch,” at which Harry Styles sarcastically turned started walking towards the exit.

There are multiple intimate scenes in the film, and both Styles and Corrin talked about the trust created between their trio that allowed them to feel safe during those scenes.

“I felt very lucky to get to work with David and Emma,” Styles said. “They’re both wonderful people to be around. Having a base of a real friendship outside of the characters allows for, the friendship scenes, if you will, it doesn’t require much acting. And then in the kind of more intense scenes, there’s a lot of trust and safety there. All of that benefits from a real connection with the people you work with, which I felt very lucky to have with the people on this project.”

Corrin attributed it to the amount of rehearsal time the cast had together before filming started.

“We had about two, three weeks rehearsal, which is very rare in film,” Corrin said. “We had three weeks to break down the scenes and talk about them, a lot of talking, which is lovely. And it meant that when it came to we all felt very safe and comfortable.”

The result is an absolutely devastating love story, but no spoilers. You’ll have to see it for yourself when the movie comes out on Amazon Prime on November 4. Until then, feel free to watch this trailer on repeat.
