Disney’s live-action Hercules is already facing fan backlash after producer Joe Russo revealed new details about the film in an interview with Variety.

According to Russo, the Guy Ritchie-directed feature will be ‘more experimental’ than past live-action adaptations and inspired by TikTok.

Soon after the interview was published, fans of the beloved 1997 animated film took to Twitter to voice their dismay — with many predicting the reimagining will be a total ‘disaster.’

‘[Hercules will be] a little bit more experimental in tone, a little bit more experimental in execution,’ Russo told the outlet.

‘I think they’re excited to see what we can all bring to it in a way that isn’t just a reinterpretation of the animated film.’

Russo says Ritchie, who directed Disney’s live-action Aladdin in 2019, is up to the task because ‘he has penchant for experimentation.’

Along with being animated, 1997’s Hercules was also a musical with most of the songs performed by a female Greek chorus.

Russo confirmed that the upcoming live-action film will be a ‘modern musical’ inspired by TikTok, which is a short-form video sharing platform.

‘There are questions about how you translate it as a musical. Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right?’ he said. ‘What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical.’

Being that Hercules has a cult following, the thought of ‘experimentation’ and ‘TikTok’ playing major roles in the live-action film’s execution rubbed many fans the wrong way.

‘Once again, instead of focusing on making a great movie, we are turning attention to a quick flash of social media popularity,’ tweeted one disappointed fan.

‘Oh this is going to be a disaster,’ another lamented while re-sharing Variety’s piece with their own followers.
