I'm A Celeb: Amir Khan's shock confession about wedding to wife Faryal
I’m A Celeb South Africa SPOILER: Amir Khan makes shocking confession about his lavish New York wedding to wife Faryal and their mammoth 4,000-guest UK reception
Amir Khan is set to tell his fellow I’m A Celebrity… South Africa campmates he did not enjoy his £1million wedding to wife Faryal Makhdoom and their party for 4,000 guests.
In Tuesday’s episode of the ITV reality show, the former boxer, 36, will discuss his nuptials after he and Faryal said ‘I do’ in 2013 in a lavish ceremony in New York in front of 400 people at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan.
The couple had a second bash in Amir’s native Britain in his hometown of Bolton a week after they got married in the US. They invited a reported 4,000 people to the occasion.
While there were 300 people in attendance at their ceremony in the Big Apple, the UK affair saw the likes of footballers Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, and boxers Ricky Hatton and David Haye in attendance.
Amir and Faryal sold pictures of themselves sat on ostentatious gold thrones during their wedding to Hello! magazine for an undisclosed sum, while he performed a full Bollywood dance routine with his ushers.
Honest: Amir Khan is set to tell his fellow I’m A Celebrity… South Africa campmates he did not enjoy his £1million wedding to wife Faryal Makhdoom during Tuesday’s episode
Big bash: The couple had a second bash in Amir’s native Britain in his hometown of Bolton a week after they got married in the US. They invited a reported 4,000 people
Sportsman Amir, who retired from boxing last year, explains: ‘Family, friends — everyone likes to be there.
‘If you call one family member, they want to bring their auntie, uncle, cousin, sister.
‘The ice-cream van man got an invitation as well!’
Amir – who is father to daughters Lamaisah, eight, Alayna, five, and son, Muhammad, three, with Faryal – adds: ‘I was not in charge of the invitations. I didn’t get to enjoy it, to be honest with you.
‘There were that many people there. It was a like a massive gala, like a big event.
‘That’s why now, if I was ever to do it again, it would be me and the wife, and keep it really simple.’
Astonished at how much he spent on the US wedding and UK party, retired javelin thrower Fatima Whitbread, 62, declared: What a waste of money!’
It comes after Faryal she would change ‘everything’ about her wedding to Amir if she could go back in time.
Speaking out: Faryal Makhdoom previously said she would change ‘everything’ about her wedding to Amir Khan if she could go back in time
The television personality previously admitted she would do things very differently today, admitting she’d like a smaller ceremony to renew her vows to the sportsman on their 10th anniversary this year.
Speaking on the couple’s reality show Meet the Khans: Big In Bolton, Faryal said: ‘I wish I could change everything about my wedding.
‘I’d changed the way I dressed because I’m more in fashion now and I’m definitely more confident to be who I am and be in front of the camera all the time.’
When asked if she’d renew her vows, she said: ‘Maybe on my tenth anniversary…
‘I think I would just do a beach wedding with a hundred people you know rather than four thousand people that you barely even know, and really enjoy it.’
Taking to Twitter following the ceremony in the Big Apple, Faryal wrote: ‘Mrs. Khan.
‘Last night was like a dream, truly amazing. Thanks to everyone that participated, really meant a lot x Now ready for the UK wedding!!’
Following their engagement in January 2012, they held a star-studded engagement party for 1,000 people at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton.
Back with a bang: Viewers of I’m A Celebrity… South Africa were delighted as the first of the stars threw themselves off a huge cliff as the series opened on Monday night (Carol Vorderman pictured)
Game play: Television presenter Carol Vorderman, 62, Diversity dancer Jordan Banjo, 30, and former boxer Amir Khan, 36, were challenged to walk off a terrifyingly-high platform (Amir pictured)
The contestants for I’m A Celebrity… South Africa faced three challenges in the first episode of the new series.
US model and TV personality Janice Dickinson and former Countdown star Carol Vorderman are among the campmates featuring in the all-stars spin-off show of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
The celebrities, who featured on previous seasons of the show, are battling it out this time to be crowned the first I’m A Celebrity Legend on the pre-recorded ITV reality TV series.
In the first episode, Carol, 62, was seen as the first campmate to arrive in South Africa before she was joined by boxing champion Amir and Diversity dancer and Kiss radio DJ Jordan Banjo.
As he arrived, Amir – who found himself embroiled in ‘Strawberry Gate’ during his appearance in 2017 – is given a strawberry-flavoured refreshment.
The 36-year-old said: ‘Everywhere I go now, people give me a bowl of strawberries.’
Ashley, 30, who was with Carol in the Australian jungle when he went home fourth in 2016, said: ‘Carol was literally like my mum the first time.’
As the celebrities got acquainted, Geordie duo Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly told the trio in a voice message that they would individually face a 50m drop over the edge of a mountain.
Challenging: Helen Flanagan overcame her fear of heights while taking on the first challenge during I’m A Celebrity… South Africa
Brutal: The show, which launched on ITV on Monday night, showed an overwhelmed Helen, 32, struggling to cope
Carol decided to go first as she was tasked with finding a numbered code, which she had to remember until being hoisted back up to the top.
The code opened a padlock that was holding stars – which earned the campmates food as in previous seasons of the show – in a cage.
Elsewhere, former royal butler Paul Burrell, Janice and the Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder arrived to face another separate challenge away from the other celebrities.
Janice, 68, who came second in 2007 when she competed during the show’s original format, admitted: ‘I just met two campmates and they seem to be such nice guys. I wish I knew who they were…’
The trio was then told to put their hands in ‘Hell Holes’ to find a key that unlocked a padlock to their stars.
Meanwhile, ex-England cricketer Phil Tufnell, former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan and Olympic athlete Fatima Whitbread arrived in another location by helicopter.
The three celebrities were told they would have to tie a row of giant, swinging red balls – called ‘Newton’s Cradle’ – together to make a bridge so they can leap and catch stars.
Unimpressed: Gillian McKeith made a surprise entry to the I’m A Celebrity… South Africa camp at the end of Monday’s episode, leaving fellow campmate Shaun Ryder (pictured) fuming
Comeback: The arrival of Gillian, 63 – who competed on series 10 of the original I’m A Celebrity in 2010 with Shaun – in camp for the all-stars spin-off show did not go down well
Special delivery: Television nutritionist Gillian was then seen emerging from a container after being brought in by several men carrying the box
Seeing the challenge, Helen, 32, said: ‘I wish I was watching this at home instead of actually doing it.’
Following the completion of their challenges, the celebrities started to arrive in their new camp home where they began dividing up the chores.
The episode then saw Ant, 47, and Dec, 47, arrive to let the camp know that another celebrity was set to arrive – TV nutritionist Gillian McKeith.
She made a surprise arrival into camp at the end of Monday’s episode, leaving fellow campmate Shaun Ryder fuming.
The arrival of the television personality – who competed on series 10 of the original I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2010 with Shaun – in camp for the all-stars spin-off show did not go down well, with Shaun telling the other stars of their first run together: ‘I almost killed her!’
Gillian, 63, was seen emerging from a container after being brought in by several men carrying the box.
In a preview for Tuesday’s instalment, Happy Mondays’ singer Shaun, who was known for his arguments with Gillian during his original run appeared to seethe as he recalled his time with her.
‘Gillian arrived in a box, she should have stayed in the box,’ he exclaimed.
Theatrics? Gillian stressed her fainting episode was not made up so she could get out of doing another tough Bushtucker Trial back in 2010
For real? Gillian was branded a ‘fake’ as she appeared to faint live on television in 2010 when hosts Ant and Dec announced she had been voted to do a seventh Bushtucker Trial
The duo’s blazing rows in 2010 saw Shaun brand the Scot ‘f****** irritating’ before telling hosts Ant and Dec: ‘If Gillian was my wife, she would be in pieces in a plastic bag, deep in a hole in the back garden.’
Unlike the original format, the first I’m A Celebrity Legend will not feature a public vote and instead sees celebrities compete to be crowned the winner.
The last series of the original format saw former England footballer Jill Scott become queen of the jungle.
I’m A Celebrity… South Africa continues on Tuesday on ITV1 and ITVX at 9pm.
