Jamie Lynn Spears catapulted to fame as the child star of Zoey 101 and as the younger sister of pop icon Britney Spears, but her acting career soon screeched to a halt when she fell pregnant at 15.

The now 32-year-old admitted that becoming a teen mom in the public eye was “hard” as everywhere she went she found headlines saying how her decision to keep her baby would “ruin my life” and the life of “every young girl who ever watched my show”.

The actress felt like the “whole world turned on me” adding: “No one said one good thing, it was; ‘You are the worst, you ruined everything, look at what a let down you are’.”

Speaking to Hannah Brown on her Better Tomorrow podcast, the mum-of-two explained that she “took responsibility in a way that made sense for me” by opting to keep her child, and hastily moved to the “middle of nowhere” in Mississippi to have and raise her baby.

Although she couldn’t quite outrun her fame as it “chased me down” even in her new rural home, Jamie tried to live like a normal person for the first time since she was six, enacting a stringent budget that she “lived very strictly by” for a decade and even got rid of her cellphone.

She claimed that the small-town living helped give her perspective on the damning things she had been reading about herself, as she realised “how petty it all is” and became determined to prove all of the critics wrong.

Jamie added: “I love my child but I would not fail, I would not give them the satisfaction.

“That was the motivation for a while like don’t let them see you sweat. It was hard.”

The former Nickelodeon star admitted that she isn’t entirely calm if she does read something negative about herself but she has better tools and a more well-equipped team to deal with it now.

However, one part of the devastating publicity she got during that time that still irks the Paramount star is that she feels no one pictured her daughter seeing those articles, insisting that even if she was “the worst person alive”, 15-year-old Maddie “doesn’t deserve to read that”.

The actress emotionally added: “She would take that on as, ‘Wait what do you mean I ruined your life? Why would they say that mama?’”

But Jamie has hope that her thriving acting career will be enough to convince her daughter otherwise if that question ever does arrive.

She explained: “I am just so thankful that my 15-year-old can see her mother working, doing what she loves. Every time someone gives me a job they’re giving my little girl something to look up to.

“They get to see their mom working and succeeding when I was told I wasn’t going to.”
