Jane Fonda, 85, worked with Jennifer Lopez, 53, in 2005 as they co-starred as family members in the Hollywood blockbuster Monster in Law. The Grace and Frankie actress has since admitted in a new interview that Jennifer unintentionally broke the skin on Jane’s face during the iconic slap scene, but never apologised.
Jane reflected on her career during a conversation with fellow actress Drew Barrymore on her chat show.
The Hollywood star played Viola Fields, Kevin’s [Michael Vartan] evil mother, who was doing everything in her power to sabotage her son’s wedding to Charlie, Jennifer’s character.
Near the end of the film, Jennifer’s character has had enough of Viola’s antics on her wedding day and slaps her.
Jane told Drew while recalling filming the intense scene: “Well, okay, the thing that comes to mind right away is, we have a slapping scene.
“I slap her, she slaps me, I slap her. Well, Jennifer — as per Jennifer — she had this enormous diamond ring.
“And so, when she slapped me one of the times, it cut open across my eye, my eyebrow. You know, she’s never apologised.”
In the film, Jennifer’s character Charlie quickly apologises to Viola for getting physical, with Jane’s character quipping that she should “get some backbone” as you never apologise after a purposeful slap.
Jennifer re-watched the film herself, sharing the video on her YouTube channel, in which she describes what happened behind the scenes in 2019.
She said: “I was so afraid to hit Jane Fonda in the face or hurt her in any way, really.
“Her character was very much like her, and my character at the time was very much like me.
“I was so afraid of her and she was so brave and like, ‘Just hit me. Don’t worry about it, it’s going to be fine’.”
In the clip, Jennifer said she noticed Jane had a blood blister on the top of her eye, claiming she did apologise to her co-star after noticing the injury.
She explained: “I was like, ‘Oh, so sorry.’ And she was like, ‘It’s fine. It’s fine.’
“It was a freaking purple blister that was sticking out and she didn’t care.
“She’s such a gangster b***h. I just love her.”
Monster in Law marked Jane’s return to Hollywood after 15 years, but the film was not a massive hit with critics.
However, it went on to become a commercial hit, grossing nearly $155 million at the global box office.
Jane had the studio in hysterics during her interview with Drew on her chat show alongside Lily Tomlin.
Jane came with gifts, giving Drew a blue vibrator, which the host proceeded to flaunt before her audience.
This had the studio in hysterics with Drew putting the sex toy to her ear, pretending it was a phone.
