Jennifer Coolidge's disastrous White Lotus tan landed her in the hospital
The White Lotus might have secured Jennifer Coolidge her first Emmy award, but her preparation for the role also landed the actress in the emergency room.
The comedy drama is set in the tropical location of Hawaii and ahead of the first season Jennifer wanted to have that sun-kissed glow for filming on location.
However, the 61-year-old revealed that she had a major allergic reaction to the spray tan she got for the series and had to go to hospital for medical treatment.
‘For The White Lotus, I didn’t want to look like a big, white marshmallow on the beach in Hawaii, so I got a spray tan,’ Jennifer told Allure in a new interview.
‘I got on the plane and I started to feel really weird. By the time I got off the flight, I had to go to the emergency room.’
It was this beauty treatment that then set off other skin irritations for the actress, including her everyday make up.
‘I think we ended up using regular makeup,’ Jennifer shared. ‘The minute we stopped filming, I would shower. I have such a quick reaction to stuff.’
The American Pie actress explained that these allergies had only developed in the past few years and now she has to be incredibly careful with what she puts on her skin.
‘I was never someone who cared very much about ingredients,’ Jennifer added.
‘Then, I’d say the last five or six years, I started getting allergic. My eyes would always be tearing up, but it never occurred to me that it was my makeup.’
The spray-tan horror story comes after Jennifer accepted the Outstanding Supporting Actress for her role as Tanya McQuoid in the HBO series on Monday night.
Despite the show’s success, Jennifer has opened up about the reservations she first had when she joined the cast.
The actress said she worried she was ‘too fat’ to be on camera, after she gained weight in the Covid-19 lockdowns.
She said: ‘It was Covid, [I was] locked up with this very nice girl that I knew in New Orleans. She was sort of a friend [and] my house sitter.
‘It was just very lonely times, and so she and I got obsessed with these vegan pizzas and we were eating a lot of them each day.’
Thankfully, her friend encouraged Jennifer to take up the role and ignore her negative thoughts about her body.
She explained that her friend said: ‘I don’t even think you know what this is. This is self-sabotage. I’ve been your friend all these years, this is incredible opportunity for you.’
Jennifer added that for ‘once in her life’ she just took her friend’s advice and well, it’s worked out pretty well.
