Jeremy Clarkson’s brutal Meghan Markle column taken down after 12k complaints

Jeremy Clarkson's brutal column in which he wrote that he dreamed of Meghan Markle being paraded through British towns and publicly shamed has been removed from The Sun's website following an outpouring of criticism.

The former Top Gear presenter, wrote: "At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, “Shame!” and throw lumps of excrement at her."

He also declared that he hates the Duchess of Sussex more than Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, and the serial killer Rose West.

The Sun removed the piece from its website sometime on Monday afternoon (December 19), after the presenter took to Twitter to address the criticism he'd received.

He wrote: "Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it. In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game Of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people. I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future."

A spokesperson for he Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) revealed that they had received more than 12,000 complaints about the article as of 5pm on Monday, which is almost equal to the total number of complaints the media regulator received in 2021 – which was 14,355.

"We will follow our usual processes to examine the complaints we have received," the spokesperson said, "this will take longer than usual because of the volume of complaints."

Among those critical of the of the presenter's comments was his daughter, influencer and podcaster Emily Clarkson.

Taking to her Instagram, she wrote: "My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the treatment of women by the media.

"I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain standing in support of those that are targeted with online hatred."

Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, who was also mentioned in the article, has also spoken out against Jeremy, describing his words as "beyond the pale".

"I think what he said about Meghan Markle was deeply misogynist and just downright awful and horrible," she pointed out. "I have to say, taking a step back from it, my overwhelming emotion about guys like Jeremy Clarkson is pity.

"I mean, what is it that makes somebody so distorted by hate that they end up writing these things? I think that possibly gives an insight into Jeremy Clarkson and the kind of person he is.

"So maybe he just needs to take a step back from things and just think about life a bit more."
