Kate Garraway has ‘lost a lot of weight’ amid stress of caring for Derek after covid battle
Kate Garraway has "lost a lot of weight" amid the stress of caring for her sick husband Derek, who is suffering with the devastating effects of long covid, a source has revealed.
The Good Morning Britain presenter, 55, has been open and honest about Derek's health battles and the effect its had on herself and their children, Darcey, 16, and Billy, 13.
In the past two years, Kate has lost weight and conscious of her own health, she's now vowed to quit smoking for the sake of her children.
A source exclusively told OK!: "Kate has made the decision to give up smoking – the reason being that she needs to be healthy for her children.
They continued: "Derek’s health has remained in this declining state for a while now and has faced a lot of set-backs in recent weeks and it’s given her a wake up call that she needs to be fit and well for her kids.
"She wants to focus on looking after herself as well as Derek this year.
"The stress of caring for him has caused her to gradually lose a lot of weight and she knows that smoking isn’t the right means of helping her to cope, so she’s making her own health the priority as she hates the thought of becoming ill herself and her children having to cope with two parents that are unwell."
Derek caught Covid-19 in early 2020 and while he shook off the virus, it caused a whole host of other health issues. He remained in hospital until April 2021.
Since then, Derek has required care and assistance as he has struggled to recover to full health, and he's spent much of that time in and out of hospital.
In early December, Kate gave a candid update on her husband's condition as she presented on Good Morning Britain.
She said: “You know, it is an onslaught — it is a long onslaught," Kate said on the show.
"I can see he has better days; he has worse days — he's thankfully at home now. It's been a long battle to get him back home again."
She continued: "I think it's very tough on him but it's very tough on the people around me.
"All jokes aside, Ben [Shephard] for all his unbelievable cheek, has been extraordinary because I can't help think all the people around me, people at GMB and radio as well, must be fed up to the back teeth.
"That is the problem I think if you are caring or have a long-term situation," she added.
Kate won the award for Best Documentary at the National TV Awards in 2021, for her doc, Kate Garraway: Finding Derek.
