Kate Garraway says husband Derek is starting to talk again
Kate Garraway reveals Derek has been back in hospital
Former political adviser Derek Draper remains badly incapacitated more than two years after spending a year in hospital – partly in a coma.
But TV’s Good Morning Britain host Kate has told fans Derek, 56, is finally starting to communicate.
She said: “It’s very much a whisper. I don’t think we’re necessarily going to have a conversation, but you get fantastic moments.”
Kate, 56, said their son Billy, 13, had been bouncing a new basketball, and Derek said: “Is that new ball?” He then added: “It’s nice.” She said: “Seeing him able to [speak] was amazing. Billy was in tears, they were hugging.
“It’s things like that that really lift you up, and the next day he was really still.”
Last year, Derek mumbled the word “pain” – the first time he had spoken since his illness.
He was admitted to hospital on March 30, 2020, days after the first Covid lockdown was enforced.
Days later, Kate, Billy and his sister Darcey, 17, were forced to isolate at home after the presenter suffered mild symptoms.
Kate has previously told how her husband’s fightback would be slow. She said: “When it’s a long battle like with Derek, there’s no end point and it can be exhausting for the people around me too.”
Since going public, she has been contacted by “thousands and thousands of people who make me feel less alone”.
Kate said the ordeal meant she was juggling her presenting job and trying to be “both Mum and Dad” to her children.
But she said: “There is still so much real hope out there. Not just in the extraordinary health care workers and researchers who definitely hold a bright light for the future, but in all the little kindnesses.
“We have had calamitous days but we got through, thanks to some wonderful people.”
