Kate Garraway’s husband Derek is rushed back to hospital for ‘serious operation’

Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper is reportedly in hospital following a “serious” medical procedure.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 55, has been supporting her husband throughout his ongoing complications from an Covid infection he contracted in 2020.

Back in July, Derek was rushed to A&E in July after he contracted sepsis, a condition that set back weeks of progress that had been made in his recovery.

The former lobbyist was said to be having an operation on his kidneys.

A source said: “This is another hammer blow for poor Derek.

"He is giving the fight against covid his absolute all, but his kidneys have suffered some pretty serious damage.”

They continued to The Sun: "Doctors explained there was no alternative but to operate. Of course Kate and the family are worried but she’s been reassured the procedure itself is routine.

“Everyone has everything crossed, and Kate is being her usual stoical self and keeping everything running, business as usual, on the home front.”

OK! has contacted a representative for Kate Garraway for comment.

Derek, 55, is thought to be Britain’s longest serving hospital in-patient as a result of catching Covid, after he spent a year recovering in hospital after suffering serious organ damage.

His latest procedure comes after he fought off a life-threatening sepsis infection back in July.

Kate gave an update on her husband on Good Morning Britain on Thursday 18 Auust when speaking to rail union boss Mick Lynch.

"I spend pretty much all of my time on trains, or in hospital with Derek," she told him, appearing to imply that her other half is still in hospital, but out of the intensive care unit.

The comments came during a brief chat about the current rail strikes gripping the nation, as Kate went on to praise the high levels of service she had experienced from staff, while using the services regularly to visit her husband.

At the time of his sudden infection last month, Kate was informed his condition during a live phone call backstage at the Good Morning Britain set. She was later told that he had developed "severe sepsis" that left him fighting for his life.

It was the second update on Derek’s condition Kate has given concerned fans in recent weeks, as earlier this month she revealed that thankfully the gruelling infection had been brought under control by medics.

"The sepsis is under control. One kidney is looking really good, just need to look at the other one,” she told fans at home.

“We’re back on the right side of it now.”
