Kate Middleton reacts to new Princess of Wales title previously held by Diana
The new Princess of Wales has reacted to her new royal title, and said she "appreciates the history associated with this role".
King Charles has confirmed his daughter-in-law Kate would take the title. She is the first person to have it since the late Princess Diana. The news was confirmed in his first speech since the Queen's death.
He said: "As my Heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me. He succeeds me as Duke of Cornwall and takes on the responsibilities for the Duchy of Cornwall which I have undertaken for more than five decades.
"Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty.
"With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given."
Sharing Kate and William's reaction, a royal source said: "The couple are focussed on deepening the trust and respect of the people of Wales over time.
The source continued: "The Prince and Princess of Wales will approach their roles in the modest and humble way they’ve approached their work previously.
"The new Princess of Wales appreciates the history associated with this role but will understandably want to look to the future as she creates her own path.”
Soon after King Charles' speech, Kate and William's official Twitter account, @kensingtonroyal, was amended to reflect the changes.
The Twitter page now reads: "The official account of The Prince and Princess of Wales and The Royal Foundation, based at Kensington Palace."
Kate now takes on the same mantle as Diana, who first took the title 'Princess of Wales' when she married Charles in 1981. The change in title comes as a result of the Queens death, but also just after the 25th anniversary of Diana's passing too.
Speaking of Prince Harry and Meghan the new King said: "I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas."
Charles ended his speech with a farewell to his mother, and said sweetly: "To my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: thank you.
"Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years. May ‘flights of angels sing thee to thy rest’."
