Kate Middleton reunited with old teacher in sweet pictures at royal engagement
Kate Middleton was stunned when she was reunited with her old history teacher on a visit to Cornwall – giving him a big hug.
The Princess of Wales proved to be a massive hit with the crowds on the royal engagement – playing with babies and posing for selfies with thrilled fans.
The 41 year old princess looked flawless once again – wearing a stylish, long brown coat over a crimson roll neck dress with knee-high suede boots.
And, as she arrived at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, she lit up when she recognised her old history teacher Jim Embury – breaking unwritten royal protocol by giving him a warm embrace.
According to Cornwall Live, a delighted Princess Kate told him: "The things you taught me, I now teach to my children."
Jim, who taught the Princess at her prep school around 25 years ago and is a volunteer at the maritime museum, later said he was thrilled by the encounter with his former pupil.
He said: "She was a fantastic student and it was a great class.”
Hugging well wishers on engagements is generally thought to be against unwritten royal rules – though members of the monarchy are increasingly doing it as they seek to engage with the public more closely.
The visit to Cornwall on Thursday was the first time Kate and Prince William, 40, have visited the county since becoming The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall.
The couple visited the harbour town of Falmouth to learn about Cornwall’s maritime heritage before visiting a community centre supporting people in the area.
Crowds of well wishers lined the streets to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall to the town – with Kate in particular proving incredibly popular.
The Princess of Wales delighted onlookers by playing with a baby in the crowd. She also stooped low to chat to a little girl wearing a princess tiara, who appeared to give Kate a homemade bracelet. Another well-wisher handed Princess Kate a bouquet of flowers.
And then the Princess posed for a series of selfies with excited members of the crowd.
According to Cornwall Live, the Duke and Duchess first toured through the National Maritime Museum and went into the workshop to meet some volunteers from the local marine school.
They were told about the work being done to boats including the Titanic Lifeboat 13 and the Kiwi boat.
Kate inquired about pictures of them in the early days and William joked he’d keep his eyes peeled for parts and wished them “the best of luck”.
The royal couple also helped students from the local marine school with work on one of the boats, with Kate saying that William “can do the hammering”, though the Princess did also give it a go afterwards.
The Duchess of Cornwall was again all smiles as she took part in a model boat race with local school children.
During the visit, Kate and William were also set to hear from a group of young people taking part in the ‘Young and Talented Cornwall’ scheme, which provides financial support to help youngsters across Cornwall reach their full potential, regardless of their financial means or background.
The fund has given out almost £350,000 to 275 individuals in the past ten years – supporting future Olympic medal winners, rugby players, and musicians now playing in major orchestras – among others.
William, heir to the throne, inherited the Duke of Cornwall title from his father when Charles acceded to the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September.
So, as well as being the Prince of Wales, William is also the Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge.
Princess Kate is now known as the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.
Speaking about Thursday’s visit to Falmouth, a spokeswoman for the couple said: “The Duke and Duchess will learn about Cornwall’s maritime heritage before visiting a local community centre which is going the extra mile to give opportunities to individuals while building a supportive and cohesive community.”
In November, William made his first official visit to Cornwall since taking on the title Duke of Cornwall.
He met staff, volunteers and young people at Newquay Orchard, which offers environmental education, employability training and community events.
