‘I just believed that love is love — it doesn’t matter what we look like,’ the Firefly Lane actor told Parents.

‘But then when I asked my sister, Meg, if she had been treated one way when she was out in public without our parents and a different way when she was out by herself without them, she said, “Oh yeah, all the time!”

‘That made me realize I had been so naïve.’

The star at first felt  ‘angry’ with herself.

‘But I had to calm down and realize, OK, this isn’t about how it makes me feel,’ she explained.

‘It’s about how I need to protect my daughters and prepare them for the world, because I can’t change society in one fell swoop.’

During the sit-down, the 27 Dresses actress spoke about multiple aspects of her new venture and explained why she chose to become involved in the pet food industry.

The actress and avowed dog lover’s products were made available to the public last month.

Heigl began by speaking about how her interest in dog food was partially inspired by her research into healthy living.

She recalled that as she became ‘more and more aware of gut healing and nutrition, and the connection between our guts and our brains…and I thought, ‘Well, why is it different? How different is it for our animals?”

Early days: She got her start on Grey’s Anatomy; seen with Justin Chambers, Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey in 2005

Then she became a big movie star: She was in the hit film Knocked Up with Seth Rogen in 2007

The Grey’s Anatomy actress then expressed that she tried cooking for her dogs and trying out ‘human-grade’ food plans for her pets.

The Primetime Emmy Award-winning performer went on to remark that she set out to create food for dogs with ‘as much healthy healing nutrition as possible.’

Heigl also dished on the ‘trendy’ herbal supplements she has included in the formula, including lion’s mane mushroom.

‘People are adding it to their coffee, adding it to their smoothies,’ she said of the plant-based adaptogens her formula features. ‘We can give the dog some of that added help as well.’

The performer also made a point of speaking about how the sales of her products would also benefit the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, which she previously co-founded with her mother.

The foundation serves to bring awareness to pet-related issues in the United States, including mistreatment, which she described as ‘a massive problem in our country for these companion animals.’

Opening up:  Heigl spoke about her dog food line, Badlands Ranch, during an interview with People that was released in August

Heigl added that ‘The food is this beacon of hope for us financially to try to continue to do the work that we’re doing.’

The performer also expressed that she wanted to branch out in terms of Badlands Ranch’s output.

‘I’d like to see us have added supplements for things like anxiousness. We see…a lot of these dogs coming out of a shelter or kennel situation where their anxiety is way up there,’ she said.

Heigl also revealed she has a total of nine dogs at her house, including the two Rottweiler puppies she is currently fostering.

The actress has appeared in several promotional images from her brand that have been shared to its official Instagram account.
