Katie Holmes Channels Princess Diana in a Powder Blue Sweatshirt and Chunky Sneakers

Katie Holmes is known for her minimalistic yet fashion-forward street style, whether she’s sporting a cashmere bralette, overalls, or a blanket dress. But even while the Dawson’s Creek alum is casually running errands, her outfit still manages to strike a sartorial chord.

Yesterday, the actress was photographed out and about in New York City wearing a powdery-blue sweat suit and chunky white sneakers. The ensemble calls to mind another fashion icon who established the sweatshirt-and-chunky-trainer combo as the nonchalant uniform for It girls everywhere: Princess Diana. Although, the late Princess of Wales memorably styled her jumpers with a pair of biker shorts.

Holmes kept her accessories low-key, carrying only a large black shoulder bag.

Holmes previously talked to BAZAAR.com about pairing the pressures of Hollywood dressing with her own personal style.

“We live in a world where we have a premiere and you want to look nice, and it turns into being a fashion person, and I’m like, ‘Well, I just like to look nice, I’m not really a fashion person.’ We all just want to look good,” she says. “I love my T-shirts, and I love my vintage T-shirts. They’re so yummy. They’re a little dirty, a little stained or whatever, and that’s me.”

She also encouraged others to look into sustainable practices, like buying vintage or preowned items, when it comes to updating your wardrobe.

“We don’t have a choice anymore,” she adds. “We have to be smart and conscious, and do the right thing.”
