Ask for help
Christine McGuinness has said that her nine-year-old daughter Penelope told her she “didn’t want to live” during the pandemic, which is absolutely heartbreaking.
I don’t think the pandemic had that much of an effect on my children in that sense, but Heidi suffers with anxiety and a lack of self-confidence in general. And she has got to a point where she’s spoken like that. She once sat on her bed and told me she didn’t want to be here any more.
It broke my heart and I cried my eyes out. You feel completely helpless. I don’t think social media helps – I think it heightens children’s anxiety. I’m glad Heidi feels she can be open with me. She has grief counselling at school because she struggled after my ex George Kay died.
Mental health is a very real thing and my anxiety is also through the roof. I’ve been back to my doctor to ask for help. Nobody should feel embarrassed. It’s so important to speak out.
Heading on holiday
As I write my column this week, I’m sitting in the airport waiting to board my flight to Marbella. We’re going for two weeks and I can’t wait for some family time with Ryan and the kids.
The last time we were out there, Ryan and I were looking at houses. We just want to enjoy our holiday this time, have some fun and relax. I must admit, I can’t wait to switch off. But towards the end of the holiday, we probably will end up looking at some more places with the help of our estate agent Liam from Crystal Shore Properties. It’s a very exciting time.
Podcast prude
The kids have broken up from school now. Heidi and DJ are doing really well – their reports have always been amazing. But Max struggles and I get emails from the school about his behaviour. He does find it hard as he’s got ADHD, but he knows ight from wrong. I’ve been speaking to his teachers about getting extra support at school, so hopefully that will help.
Last week, I recorded two podcasts. The first one was with Leigh Francis, which felt so nostalgic. I’ve known him for years so it was great to catch up.
The second was on BBC Sounds – and it was about sex toys. People assume I’m open about things like that, but I’m actually a prude! I don’t want to give much away, but they were both a lot of fun. Keep your eyes peeled.
Cleaning queen
I’ve been thinking recently that I want to bring out my own cleaning range. I find cleaning really therapeutic.
Every Sunday I put some music on and I get the kids up and say, “Come on, kids, it’s cleaning day!” I really enjoy it, especially when it’s sunny outside.
I think a tidy room is a tidy mind. I’m very tidy, so I don’t understand why my kids are so messy. It drives me bloody insane and I can’t stand to look at it. A clean house makes me very happy.
I want a J.Lo wedding
Congratulations to Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, who have tied the knot 20 years after they originally got engaged. The couple wed at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas.
The way they got married is exactly the same as how Ryan and I want to do it – a low-key ceremony in Vegas.
We’re just waiting for Covid restrictions to ease a bit more in America and then we’ll go ahead and do it.
Apparently J.Lo is changing her surname, which I find really weird because Ben’s first wife was also called Jennifer. I wouldn’t want the same name! I’m not changing my name again. I was Kerry McFadden when I married Brian because I wanted to have
the same last name as the kids. I’ve changed my three younger children’s surnames to Katona, so I’ll stick with that.
