Love Island host Maya Jama reveals the worst job she’s ever had
Love IslandhostMaya Jamahas revealed that of all the jobs she’s had, there’s one in particular that she hated the most.
When asked byThe Guardianabout the worst job she’s ever had, the TV presenter admitted that her stint working in retail was her least favourite position.
Maya cited the long hours and always being on her feet as the reason behind her choice, although she did admit that working in retail was “good vibes”, after spending her younger years working part time at clothing store Urban Outfitters while she was trying to break into the presenting industry.
It may have been the worst job she’s ever had, but Maya did say that working in the clothing store helped keep her presenting dream alive. Speaking to A List in 2018, Maya said: “It was super social and everyone in there had a dream. It was like, ‘We’ll go to work and do this but we’ve all got this dream,’ and you’d share it in the changing room.

“I used to constantly talk about it, pretty much everything I’m doing now, I’m super-grateful and blessed and I have to pinch myself now and again.”
In her interview with The Guardian, Maya also revealed that one of the worst things anyone ever said to her was that she wouldn’t be successful. Hitting back, she said: ”Joke’s on them, I guess.”
The Love Island presenter was also asked what her biggest disappointment in life so far had been, with Maya replying: “Probably missing out on roles I really, really wanted, but I’m a big believer that if it’s for you, you’ll have it. So those clearly weren’t for me.”
Just 11 years ago, Maya moved from Bristol to London to pursue her dreams of showbiz, and lived off £1 chicken dinners to try and get by. She toldThe Sunday Times: “I was broke, pretending I’d lost my Oyster card every day so I could get to work. Hustling my little way around London, having £1 chicken-shop meals every day.
“But I was happy, I was working and I was living in London, I felt like I was getting somewhere. I’d just work as much as I could.”
While working her part time job at Urban Outfitters, Maya snagged a job as a showrunner for production firm Jump Off.TV, before going on to present its weekly music video countdown. From there, she moved on to TRACE Sports on Sky and Rinse FM, which got her the experience she needed to break into bigger presenting gigs.
Now, Maya presents hit ITV series Love Island, taking over from previous hostLaura Whitmoreafter she quit the show last year, and has been an instant success thanks to her witty banter and scene-stealing villa wardrobe.
You can catch Maya on Love Island each night on ITV2 at 9pm.
