Malala has the final word on Harry Styles spitgate in iconic Oscars moment
Oscars presenter Jimmy Kimmel gave Nobel Peace Prize 2014 winner Malala Yousafzai the opportunity to weigh in on last year's 'Spitgate' during a break from the golden handouts.
Incase you missed it, back in September Don't Worry Darling duo Harry Styles and Chris Pine were entangled in a rather bizarre bit of hearsay, with the former seemingly captured on video spitting on his co-star before sitting down at the Venice Film Festival.
The final say, though, arrived six months later at Hollywood's iconic Dolby Theatre, with Jimmy telling Malala in the star-studded 95th Oscars audience: "Great to have you here, congratulations on your movie.
"This question is from Joanne Nicolades from Brooklyn, New York. She asks: 'Your work on human rights and education for women and children is an inspiration. As the youngest Nobel Prize winner in history, I was wondering, do you think Harry Styles spat on Chris Pine?'"
After taking several seconds to think about her reply, the 25 year old Pakistani expertly came back with: "I only talk about peace."
"You know what, that's why you're Malala and nobody else is!" smiled Jimmy before moving on with the rest of the ceremony.
Earlier on in the evening, the US talkshow host's opening gambit paid tribute to the likes Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler, whose muscular turns in The Woman King and Till were left unacknowledged by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members.
"There are a number of excellent films and performances that were not nominated tonight including Till and The Woman King, which are both based on true stories. Great performances by Danielle Deadwyler and Viola Davis that are very worthy of your time if you haven't seen them," he said.
"As is a small independent film that's called Top Gun: Maverick. The movie that saved the movies."
Punching another hole in the Academy, Jimmy also alluded to its historical overlooking of female filmmakers.
"Some of the cynics are saying that Jim Cameron isn't here because he didn't get a Best Director nomination, and, while I find that very hard to believe about a man of such peak humility, he does have a point… how does the Academy not nominate the person who directed Avatar?" he questioned. "Who do they think he is? A woman?"
Will Smith's slapping of 2022 host Chris Rock didn't go unmentioned, either.
Jimmy, who was presenting the prestigious awards for a third time, joked: "We want you to have fun, we want you to be safe and we want me to be safe.
"If any person in this theatre commits an act of violence, you will be awarded Best Actor and be allowed to give a 19-minute speech…"
