‘We can’t laugh anymore’: Marlon Wayans hits back at cancel culture as he claims comedy movies like White Chicks are ‘needed’

He’s known for his role in a slew of wacky comedies, including 2004 hit White Chicks.

And Marlon Wayans has now explained that we ‘need’ these kind of movies in the world, as he struck down on ‘cancel culture’.

The actor, 50, claimed ‘we can’t laugh anymore’ while discussing the 18 years since White Chicks’ release, explaining that he won’t change his ways or jokes.

Talking to Buzzfeed in a recent interview, Marlon shared that he would rather tell a joke and be ‘cancelled’ than be scared to tell a punchline.

When asked by the publication if White Chicks could thrive now, 18 years after its release and among stricter censorship, the actor said this kind of movie is ‘needed’.

‘I don’t know what planet we’re on, where you think people don’t need laughter, and that people need to be censored and cancelled.

‘If a joke is gonna get me cancelled, thank you for doing me that favour. It’s sad that society is in this place where we can’t laugh anymore,’ he explained.

Marlon starred in White Chicks alongside brother Shawn, as the pair portrayed two FBI agents who went undercover as cruise line heiresses, in order to stop the real women getting abducted.

The film, which was directed by his brother Keenan, has been marked as a popular cult classic – despite a rocky release and ‘worst picture’ Razzie nomination back in 2004.

But throughout the years, there has been some controversy of its racial undertones as Marlon and Shawn’s characters dress up with whiteface make-up.

Telling Buzzfeed he has faith in his withstanding audience not to change what he does, Marlon said: ‘These scared-a** people, these scared executives. Y’all do what you want to do? Great. I’m still gonna tell my jokes the way I tell them.

‘And if you want to make some money, jump on board. And if not, then I’ll find a way to do it myself. I know my audience. 

Marlon has recently starred in new release The Curse of Bridge Hollow, with the role seeing him move from comedy and raunchy releases to a PG flick.

Admitting that the change comes as ‘it’s time to grow up’, the star explained that as a parent he now thinks what he’d like to see with his family.
