Meghan Markle mystery as Lion King star ‘confused’ by royal wedding celebration claim

An actor from Disney's remake of The Lion King has said he is "baffled" by the Duchess of Sussex's story about people in South African taking to the streets to celebrate her Royal wedding.

Dr John Kani, who voiced Rafiki in the movie, has said Meghan Markle seems to have made a "faux pas" in her recent interview with US magazine, The Cut, where she said an unnamed South African actor from the cast of the movie made the comments to her about her wedding.

The actor, who claims to be the only South African cast member of The Lion King remake, went on say he'd never met the Duchess despite Meghan having said she chatted to a South African actor at the film's premiere.

Meghan recalled a moment that she was told that her royal wedding in 2018 led to celebrations in South Africa that mirrored the atmosphere when Nelson Mandela was freed from jail.

During the interview that has already caused much controversy, Meghan recalled being at the Lion King Premiere in London in 2019 and speaking to a male South African cast member.

She said: "He looked at me, and he’s just like light. He said, 'I just need you to know: When you married into this family, we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison'."

However, Dr Kani, who has also starred in performances for the Royal Shakespeare Company, told MailOnline he was the only South African cast member in the Disney movie, and was not at the UK premiere and has never met the Duchess of Sussex.

The actor continued: "I have never met Meghan Markle. This seems like something of a faux pas by her. I have never met the Duchess at all. I am the only South African member of the cast and I did not attend the premiere in London."

He added: "I went to Hollywood as we opened there and from there I had to go immediately to Paris where I was shooting a film sequel, so I couldn't hang around. The only South African was me playing Rafiki. But I did not go to the opening in Leicester Square as I didn't have the time to do that. It just may be a mis-remembering on her side."

According to the MailOnline, Dr Kani went on to say that her comments were "baffling" and that Harry and Meghan's big day was "no big deal" in his home country.

He later added: "I am confused about this. She is an important person in her own life."

His comments regarding Meghan's interview comes just over a month after Prince Harry spoke at the UN for Nelson Mandela Day in New York City on July 18.
