Paddy and Christine McGuinness devastating split has been a long time coming

Christine and Paddy McGuinness have split after 11 years of marriage, with a source telling OK! their decision has been "a long time coming".

Their 15-year relationship became increasingly strained during the Real Housewives of Cheshire star's stint in ITV's The Games in April, where Paddy was noticeably absent.

They will continue to co-parent after deciding to go their separate ways.

"It’s been a difficult few years for Christine and Paddy but their relationship really started to really break down during her participation in The Games in April when they spent time apart and Paddy didn’t support his wife at all during the show," the source said.

They added that Paddy, 48, and 34 year old Christine – who are parents to twins Leo and Penelope, nine, and five year old Felicity – were previously planning on going on holiday as a family to Spain.

"They’d booked a holiday to Spain with the children but ended up getting a last minute booking at Nottinghamshire's Sherwood Forest Center Parcs after realising their daughter’s passport had expired," they said.

The source continued: "The kids had an incredible time, even though Christine was worried that they’d struggle with the last minute change due to their autism and need for rigid plans."

They went on: "But it was during this time that Christine and Paddy realised their relationship couldn’t be salvaged and came to a mutual decision to announce their separation."

The source said that the end of their marriage had not been a surprise to Christine who is "in a good place".

They told us: "It has been a long time coming and while the split is obviously devastating, Christine is in a good place as she has been dealing with the split for a few months.

"They will continue to co-parent their children and support each other in every way they can."

OK! approached Christine and Paddy's representative for comment.

In a joint statement, the couple broke the news to their followers as they wrote: "We hadn't planned on sharing this publicly until we were ready but after the lack of privacy surrounding our personal life, we feel left with no other option but to clarify.

"A while ago we took the difficult decision to separate but our main focus as always is to continue loving and supporting our children.

"This was not an easy decision to make but we're moving forward as the best parents we can be for our three beautiful children. We'll always be a loving family, we still have a great relationship and still live happily in our family home together.

"We hope this now draws a line under any more unwanted and unnecessary intrusion into our private life.

"Although we work in the public eye we ask kindly if you could respect our wishes for privacy on this matter. We'll be making no further comment."
