Paul McCartney divides opinion with Johnny Depp clip at Glastonbury
‘It feels like it goes against everything Glastonbury stands for’: Sir Paul McCartney divides opinion as he uses clip of friend Johnny Depp during My Valentine performance at festival
Sir Paul McCartney played a clip of Johnny Depp from an old music video as he headlined Glastonbury on Saturday night.
The former Beatles singer, 80, took to the famous Pyramid Stage this weekend and actor Johnny, 59, was seen using sign language on a screen behind him as Sir Paul sung his track My Valentine.
Johnny, who recently won his defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, was featured in the 2012 music video for My Valentine alongside actress Natalie Portman, 41, and Sir Paul’s choice to use the clip at Glastonbury divided opinion among music fans.

The visual, which features Natalie lip syncing to the music while Johnny strums an acoustic guitar, was streamed on the big screens at Worthy Farm as well as on the BBC.
Sir Paul recently used the footage in his recent US Get Back tour, while the Pirates Of The Caribbean star was in the midst of his defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, which he later won.
The rocker did not address Johnny’s $100million court case against Amber directly during the concert but as soon as the images of the actor appeared on stage, the crowd cheered.

The use of the clip divided the opinion of viewers who were watching Sir Paul’s performance on BBC One from home.
Taking to Twitter to praise the musician – who celebrated his 80th birthday on 18 June – for using the clip, one fan wrote: ‘Happy Birthday Sir Paul, hope it was a blessed and wonderful day and thank you for supporting fellow survivor Johnny Depp.’
Another viewer at home wrote: ‘#PaulMcCartney played a video of #JohnnyDepp during his set tonight headlining at Glastonbury thank you #JOHNNYDEPPWINS.’
While someone else shared: ‘#johnnydepp signing on massive screens to #PaulMcCartney singing at #Glastonbury was everything.’

However, the use of the clip of Johnny in the My Valentine video during Glastonbury did not go down well with everyone, with one person writing: ‘I’m so sad that a man like Paul McCartney has chosen to give Johnny Depp a platform.’

Sir Paul’s use of the clip of Johnny comes after the Hollywood actor’s ex-wife Amber, 36, admitted she can’t afford the $8.3million in damages awarded to him during a Dateline interview last week.
Dapper: The performer donned a smary navy blue Nehru jacket for the opening moments of his headline set, but later removed it, telling the crowd it would be his ‘only wardrobe change of the night’
It’s here! Greeting the crowd at the start of the show, Paul said: ‘Oh man, it’s so good to be here. We were supposed to be doing this three years ago!’
It is unclear whether he will enforce the ruling and ask Amber to pay the high sum of money in its totality.
His lawyers have hinted that might not be the case, saying his motivation behind the lawsuit, which was to restore his reputation after Amber raised claims of domestic abuse in a 2016 Washington Op-ed, has already been achieved.
Speaking to NBC’s Dateline last week, she chose to focus on the positives after the trial left her reputation severely bruised and her opportunities for work continue to decrease.
Kind: Paul’s show wasn’t without drama, as it was reported he briefly halted his show to check on a member of the audience, who appeared to be in distress
The actress said that a silver lining of not being busy with work at the moment is that she can enjoy being a full-time mother to one-year-old daughter Oonagh.
In a chat screened in its entirety for the first time Friday, Amber told Dateline’s host Savannah Guthrie that she was ‘terrified’ of telling her side of the story.
The actress said she had been wounded by the ‘hate and vitriol’ directed at her, but did not regret bringing the case.
‘I know the scariest, most intimidating thing for anybody talking about sexual violence is not being believed, being called a liar, or being humiliated,’ she said.
Amber said she was not speaking out because she was ‘vindictive’.
‘This would be a really lousy way of getting vengeance,’ she said. ‘As silly as it is to say this out loud, my goal is – I just want people to see me as a human being.’

Amber’s interview raised eyebrows, with her repeating her defamatory allegations that he beat her.
Despite continuing to air her allegations, Amber insists that she wants nothing more than to move on with her life, telling Savannah: ‘I look forward to living my life and I have a long one, I hope, in front of me. And I will continue to walk through this with my chin up.’
In the interview, Amber admitted that she ‘absolutely still loves’ Johnny – despite branding him a ‘liar’ who swayed the jury with his ‘fantastic acting’, as well as: ‘I will [stand by my testimony] to my dying day. I know what happened to me. I’m here as a survivor,’ she said.
‘To my dying day I will stand by every word of my testimony.’

Shortly before the interview aired, Amber’s team insisted they were unrepentant.
‘If Mr Depp or his team have a problem with this, we recommend that Johnny himself sit down with Savannah Guthrie for an hour and answer all her questions,’ a spokesperson told MailOnline, as Amber branded Johnny, a ‘liar’ and doubled down on claims that he beat her and sexually assaulted her during their relationship.
Amber also released a ‘binder full’ of notes from her therapist, which she claims is fresh evidence proving her allegations of physical and sexual abuse against her by Depp – despite the notes already being dismissed by the judge.
Amber turned over ‘years’ worth’ of notes taken by her therapist detailing instances when she says the actor ‘hit her, threw her against a wall, and threatened to kill her’.
The judge in her trial against Johnny had already dismissed the notes as ‘hearsay’ and barred her legal team from submitting the documents as evidence.
Nevertheless, the actress has now gone public with the binder, which ‘dates back to 2011 from the very beginning of her relationship’.
Earlier this month, a jury ruled that Amber defamed her ex-husband by publishing a piece about being a sexual assault survivor in the Washington Post.
She was ordered to pay Johnny $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, although the second payment was reduced to $350,000 per Virginia law by the judge.
She was awarded a relatively paltry $2 million in compensatory damages, meaning that Johnny walked away from the case with Amber owing him $8.35million.
