Paul O’Grady looked to be in good spirits as the pet lover cradled a dog in his arms in a photo shared on Instagram just three days ago. Another photo also posted days ago showed the comic, who has died suddenly, posing with a fan outside the Edinburgh Playhouse.

Taking to Frankie the Mini Daxie’s Instagram page, the sweet photo was captioned: “Yesterday was the best day at work ever! I got to meet everyone’s favourite dog loving legend @paulogrady.”

“Thanks for the cuddles and all the attention.”

Social media users flocked to comment on the post as many fans shared their shock over the news Paul has since died.

Scarlett penned: “I cannot believe the news this morning.”

Dernie wrote: “Just woken up to see the news then came on here and saw this gorgeous photo!”

A third snap from five days ago shows the star dressed as Miss Hannigan, the main antagonist in Annie, and holding another dog.

He was an ambassador for Battersea Cats and Dogs Home and had rehomed several rescue dogs himself.

Days before his death, Paul was spotted in a bar in Edinburgh smiling with punters.

In a picture shared to social media, Paul beamed as he clutched a drink with a fan, who described the “legend” as a “lovely man”.

Last night, Paul’s husband said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening.

“We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.

“He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.

“I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”

Paul had been touring around the country in Annie, playing character Ms Hannigan right up until his death.

He had been booked to play the part for another week in Liverpool in June.

Paul and Andre were married during a low-key wedding ceremony in 2017.

The father-of-one’s cause of death was not immediately revealed, however, he had previously spoken of surviving heart attacks in 2002, 2006 and 2014, and kidney failure.

During his career, he hosted The Paul O’Grady Show, Blind Date and Blankety Blank, and ITV’s multi-award-winning For The Love Of Dogs.

He also hosted the ITV celebrity game show, Paul O’Grady’s Saturday Night Line Up.
