Renée Zellweger ‘making Bridget Jones comeback for fourth film about motherhood’

Renee Zellweger is reportedly making a comeback as Bridget Jones after the last instalment saw the star pregnant and trying to figure out who the father was.

Producers are said to be secretly working on the fourth project, six years after Bridget Jones’ Baby. The actress, 53, is said to be returning to her iconic role as the lovable bachelorette only this time, she’s said to be swapping dating woes for motherhood in the popular franchise.

"There have been few more successful or more popular rom-coms than Bridget Jones over the last couple of decades, but everyone thought this one was done for good," a source revealed.

The insider continued to tell The Sun: "However the producers always knew their was a huge market for another sequel when the right story was available, and this feels like the right time to tell it.

"It will be seven or eight years since the last movie by the time this one hits the big screen, and fans will be desperate to find out what happened. It’s a British classic."

Production is said to begin later this year, with the new movie being co-penned by creator Helen Fielding, 64, and will see Renée tell the story of motherhood with her boy.

OK! Magazine has reached out to Renée Zellweger’s representatives for comment.

The last film in the franchise saw Bridget pick between her returning lover Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth, and new charmer Jack Qwant, played by Patrick Dempsey. Hugh Grant’s Daniel Cleaver didn’t return, although the film did see appearances by Emma Thompson and Jim Broadbent, and even a cameo from Ed Sheeran.

However, who knows if Hugh will return as, although Mark was indeed the father of Bridget’s baby, the ending of the film saw a newspaper headline showing Daniel had been found alive, after he was supposed to have died.

If the first two films are anything to go by, the fourth instalment will once again be Renee’s battle to pick between Mark and Daniel.

The first film, Bridget Jones’s Diary was released in 2001, while Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason followed in 2004.

Once upon a time actor Hugh Grant was not keen over by an American playing Bridget Jones and admitted he had initial reservations about Renee Zellweger being cast.

Speaking in a documentary, the Love Actually star said: “There was a whole scandal about why isn’t this a British actress.

"I didn’t know Renée Zellweger, and a Texan playing a British character – well, it did seem like a stretch."

He added: “She was told to kind of, well she thought she better loosen it up a bit.

“Then she came in and it was Princess Margaret having had a stroke. But a week later it was bang on.”

Bridget Jones’s Diary soon became a classic and took over £525 million at the box office.
