Richard Madeley reveals he needed TONGUE surgery after ‘freak accident’ at home as he returns to GMB after a two-week absence
Richard Madeley forced a gasp from Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid on Monday after revealing emergency tongue surgery was the reason for his two week absence.
The presenter has returned to the ITV breakfast show following a ten day lay-off, during which former Labour politician Ed Balls occupied his place alongside the long-serving Reid, 52.
Detailing the cause of his absence, Madeley, 66, admitted he needed an operation after haplessly smashing his chin on a car door while ‘fiddling around’ at home.
‘I was either a freak having an accident or I had a freak accident, take your pick,’ he explained.
‘I was crouching down on a slope between my open car door and I was just fiddling around with something at the bottom of the car and I turned around just as the door decided to close itself, gravity pulled it shut.’

He added: ‘It’s a big heavy door and it hit me on the chin and I really bit my tongue, to the extent I needed an op, I had to have some stitches in it.’
The admission left Reid, who announced her regular co-host’s return across social media on Sunday, with her head in her hands.
Reid recently admitted that a lot that goes on behind the scenes before viewers see her appear on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on weekdays from 6am.
The presenter has offered a rundown of what an average day looks like for her during an interview with The Sunday Times magazine, which begins with a 3.40am wakeup call from her alarm clock.
Reid revealed that she gives herself five minutes in bed to check through her emails and the days’ headlines before getting up to begin her day.

The mother of three said that the start of her day is quite rushed as she throws on a coat over her pyjamas and brushes her teeth before getting into the car sent by ITV to take her to the studio.
The time in the car is put to very good use, as she gets caught up to speed on the newspapers and briefs of the interviewees due on the show that day.
Reid also takes time to look over the stories that the researchers and producers have been putting together overnight.
She explained that the most important document she looks over on the journey is what’s known as the Grid, which gives timings and key points for the show.
The presenter admitted that it is ‘a lot’ to take in during the 25 minute car journey from her house to the studio at London Television Centre, in west London.
Confessing she loves her early schedule, she added: ‘My three boys split their time between myself and my ex.
‘The brilliant thing about my job is that so much of my working day is when they’re still sleeping and I’m already at home by the time they’re back from school or work.’
