Richard Williams defends Will Smith over Oscars slap
Richard Williams defends Will Smith over THAT Oscars slap as Venus and Serena’s father breaks his silence and claims he didn’t feel sorry for Chris Rock
Richard Williams has broken his silence to defend Will Smith, who portrayed him in the Oscar-winning biopic King Richard, after the actor’s infamous Oscars slap.
Almost one year on from the incident, the father of Serena and Venus Williams, 81, shared his support for the 54-year-old and even claimed he ‘didn’t feel sorry’ for comedian Chris Rock, 58, who was at the receiving end of the strike.
Having recently recovered from several strokes and a series of health crises, Richard doubled down on his support for Will during Monday’s Good Morning Britain, saying, ‘I’ll always stand by him.
‘I think he has done the best thing he needed to do, but I would never be disgusted with Mr Smith. Matter of fact, I appreciate Mr Smith.’
When asked if he saw any wrongdoing in what occurred at the 2022 Academy Awards, Richard said, ‘I don’t see nothing wrong with that.’
Defending: Richard Williams has broken his silence to defend Will Smith, who portrayed him in the Oscar-winning biopic King Richard, after the actor’s infamous Oscars slap
Ouch! Almost one year on from the incident, the father of Serena and Venus Williams, 81, shared his support for the 54-year-old and even claimed he ‘didn’t feel sorry’ for comedian Chris Rock, 58, who was at the receiving end of the strike
Richard also stated, ‘I don’t feel sorry for no one,’ in relation to Chris and that ‘it’s time for everyone to forgive Will Smith’.
The tennis coach even suggested the violence was justified because of Chris’s inappropriate joke about Will’s wife Jada, 51.
‘I’m 81-years-old but when I was about 51-years or younger, I almost killed any damn one, so I think Mr Smith done a great deal not to.’
Richard went on to call for Will’s Oscars ban to be lifted and, in closing, had an amusing message for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star.
He joked, ‘I’ll say my message to Mr Smith right now. Thank you very much for being so good-looking, so handsome!’
Chris recently unleashed a year of pent-up rage after being slapped across the face by Will in his new stand-up comedy special Saturday night.
In his live stand-up special, Chris claimed that anybody who really knew about the circumstances surrounding the slap knew that it wasn’t actually about him — as he accused Will of ‘selective outrage,’ lashing out because his wife had an affair.
He even brought up the fact that Jada only confessed to having an affair while interviewing her husband and noted: ‘His wife was f****** her son’s friend.’
Controversial: Chris recently unleashed a year of pent-up rage after being slapped across the face by Will in his new stand-up comedy special Saturday night
Chris said he still has ringing in his ears and watches the I Am Legend star’s feature film, Emancipation, ‘just to see him get whooped.’
The special came just one week before this year’s Oscars.
Audience members were eagerly waiting for Chris to publicly speak about getting slapped across the face as he took the stage Saturday night.
Finally, after about two and a half hours, he finally brought it up to close out the show.
‘You all know what happened to me, getting slapped by Suge Smith. Everybody knows, everybody f****** knows,’ he began.
‘I got smacked at the f****** Oscars by this motherf*****. And people are like “Did it hurt?” It still hurts. I got Summertime ringing in my ear f***** drums.
‘But I’m not a victim, you will never see me on Oprah or Gayle crying you will never see it, like, “I couldn’t believe it and I love Men in Black.” No, it’s never going to happen.
‘I took that hit like Pacquiao mother f*****,’ he said, referring to Manny Pacquiao, a professional boxer.
Ouch: He even brought up the fact that Jada only confessed to having an affair while interviewing her husband and noted: ‘His wife was f****** her son’s friend’
He noted that ‘Will Smith is significantly bigger than me. We are not the same size’.
Chris joked: ‘Will Smith does most of his movies with his shirt off. You’ve never seen me do a movie with my shirt off. If I’m in a movie getting open heart surgery, I’m in a sweater.
‘Will Smith played Mohammed Ali in a movie, you think I auditioned for that part? He played Mohammed Ali, I played Pookie in New Jack City. I played a piece of corn in Pootie Tang. S*** even in animation this motherf****** [is] bigger: I’m a zebra, he’s a shark.
‘But Will Smith practices selective outrage because everyone that knows what happened, everybody that really knows, knows I had nothing to do with that s***. I didn’t have any entanglements.
‘His wife was f***** her son’s friend.’
Before the storm: Will and Jada are pictured at the 2022 Academy Awards last year
‘Now I normally wouldn’t talk about this s***,’ Rock said. ‘But for some reason these n****** put that shit on the Internet. I have no idea why two talented people would do something that f***** low down. What the f***.
‘We’ve all been cheated on, everybody in here has been cheated on. None of us have been interviewed by the person that cheated on us on television, like “Hey I was sucking somebody else’s d***, how did that make you feel?” Why the f*** would you do that s***?’ he asked, referring to a sit-down interview Jada gave Will in 2020.
‘She hurt him way more than he hurt me, OK,’ Rock insisted, noting that following the slap: ‘Everybody in the world called him a b***.
‘I tried to call the motherf***** and give him my condolences. He wouldn’t pick up for me.
‘Everybody called him a b****,’ the comedian continued. ‘And who is he hitting? Me a n**** her knows h can be beat. That is some b**** a** s***. That I what the f*** happened, OK. I didn’t do nothing to this motherf*****.
‘Years ago, his wife said I should quit the Oscars,’ Rock recounted, referring to 2016, when Jada was going to boycott the awards ceremony as part of the #OscarsSoWhite protests.
‘I shouldn’t host because her man did not get nominated for [Concussion], the biggest piece of s**** ever. She starts it, I finished it.
‘Nobody’s picking on this b****- she started it. Nobody was picking on her. And then this n***** gives me a f****** concussion, OK. What the f*** man?’
‘I love Will Smith, my whole life I loved this man – I watched him open for Run DMC at the Nassau Coliseum. I have rooted for Will Smith my whole life and now I watch Emancipation just to see him get whooped. Got me rooting for Masa.
‘A lot of people are like “Chris why didn’t you do nothing back?” Because I got parents that’s why, because I was raised,’ he concluded.
‘And you know what my parents taught me? Don’t fight in front of white people.’
The other man: Jada had admitted to having an affair with singer August Alsina in an episode of her web-series with her husband in 2020 (pictured in 2017)
Jada had admitted to having an affair with singer August Alsina in an episode of her web-series with her husband in 2020.
She explained that she first met August through their son Jaden, and recalled the singer, who would have been 23 at the time, was ‘really sick’.
Jada said: ‘And it all started with him just needing some help, me wanting to help his health, his mental state.
‘The outpouring for him from our family was initially about his health,’ she told her husband. ‘We found all those different resources to help pull him through and from there, you and I were going through a very difficult time.’
At that point, Will admitted: ‘I was done with you,’ while Jada added that they decided to separate for a ‘period of time’.
‘And then what did you do, Jada?’ Will asked, urging his wife to keep talking.
‘As time went on, I got into a different type of entanglement with August,’ Jada explained.
The mother-of-two went on to respond to August’s claim that Will gave her ‘permission’ to have an affair.
‘The only person that can give permission in that circumstance is myself,’ she insisted.
‘But what August was probably trying to communicate because I could see how he could see it as permission because we were separated amicably, and I think he wanted to make it clear he’s not a home wrecker, because he’s not.’
When Will pushed Jada to clarify what she meant by ‘entanglement’ she responded, ‘It was a relationship, absolutely.’
Jada continued: ‘I was in a lot of pain, and I was very broken. In the process of that relationship I definitely realized that you can’t find happiness outside yourself.’
Hilarious: Chris said he still has ringing in his ears and watches the I Am Legend star’s feature film, Emancipation, ‘just to see him get whooped’
Several years later, at the Oscars ceremony last year, Chris made fun of Jada’s hair loss, remarking that she looked like she was preparing for a role in a sequel to GI Jane.
While Will could originally be seen laughing, when the cameras turned back to Rock, he marched up on the stage and slapped the comedian across the face,
The actor subsequently returned to his seat and began yelling at Rock from his table, chastising him with the now-infamous line ‘keep my wife’s name out [of] your f***ing mouth!’
The performer subsequently received substantial backlash from much of the entertainment industry for his conduct during the awards ceremony.
Will was ultimately banned from attending any Academy-related events for 10 years.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 & ITVX.
