Giggs, 48, denies subjecting ex Kate Greville, 36, to years of controlling and coercive behaviour, of headbutting her and also assaulting her sister Emma during a row. The Manchester United legend wept in court yesterday as he described his arrest and subsequent night behind bars.
He said: “I was scared, [I had] never been in that position before.”
Giggs, a star player at Old Trafford for nearly three decades, started crying as he said it was the “worst experience of my life” and he had “hardly any” sleep.
The dad of two admitted to jurors earlier this week he was a love cheat and “flirt by nature” after
Kate claimed he had eight affairs behind her back over six years.
Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court heard the alleged headbutt and assault took place after a row over messages Kate found on Giggs’ iPad to other women on November 1, 2020.
She left the hotel where they were planning to stay the night to return to Giggs’ £1.7million mansion in Worsley, Gtr Manchester, where her sister Emma, 26, was dogsitting the couple’s puppy Mac.
When Giggs also returned home, on arrival the former Wales manager found Mac’s crate in the boot of his
Mercedes and removed it. His barrister Chris Daw QC asked: “Were you aggressive with them?”
The father of two replied: “No”. Giggs said he could not find his phone and thought Kate had it, which she denied.
He said he later found it and then discovered Kate’s phone in the utility room, and said that he put it in his same back pocket.
When asked by Mr Daw why he held on to Kate’s phone, Giggs said it was “tit for tat” because she had taken his. He said they moved around the kitchen island as Kate grabbed for his wrist before they “clashed heads”. The barrister asked: “Did she accuse you of anything? Giggs replied: “Yes, of hitting her, of headbutting her.”
Mr Daw queried: “Did you put your hands on Kate’s shoulders and forcefully and deliberately headbutt her in the face?” Giggs said: “No.”
The court heard Kate moved into Giggs’ house during the first Covid lockdown in March 2020.
The star was asked about an incident at London’s Stafford Hotel in which Kate claimed he threw a bag at her head with a laptop in it, had forced her out of bed and ejected her naked into the corridor.
Giggs said it was an argument that fizzled out and “we more or less made up that evening”. He also admitted “a slip” by calling Kate by his ex-wife’s name Stacey. He also revealed that he once called a house team meeting on how to load the dishwasher. The trial continues.
