Rylan Clark recalls terrifying moment his heart stopped twice amid marriage split
Rylan Clark has revealed the terrifying moment his heart stopped as he recalled a particularly harrowing health scare in the wake of his split from husband Dan Neal last year.
The popular TV presenter, best known for fronting shows such as Big Brother’s Bit On The Side, This Morning and Ready Steady Cook, opened up about the ordeal, as he told his fans he had been rushed to hospital twice by ambulance after suffering two terrifying heart failures at his Essex home.
He said: “Twice last year I ended up in the back of an ambulance because my heart failed."
“I just remember the shot going in and all of a sudden this feeling from the middle of your body, both ways, almost takes you over, and you just stop and my heart stopped.
“There's just seven faces and this bright light just looking at me. And then I took a breath. And they were like, 'He's in a normal rhythm’.
“I was like, 'What the f**k is going on?’”
Rylan shared the tale of his traumatic experience at a talk at London’s Royal Festival Hall to celebrate the launch of his new book Ten: The Decade That Changed My Future, where he told fans: “I knew it wasn't right. It turned out that my heart had to be restarted.
“I remember laying in resus and I had all these pads on with all these wires and not understanding what it was.
“It was only afterwards that I said, 'What was the pads for?' And they said, 'If you didn't take your breath… because we would have had to restart you electrically'.
“You don't even think about it when you're there. So I didn't just get mentally ill, I got physically ill.”
The scary experience happened not long after Rylan had split from his partner of six years, Dan Neal and formed just one part of a harrowing 2021 for the star – with his family believing the pain he was experiencing was due to heartbreak and not a serious health problem.
However Rylan’s heart issue was anything but a simple heartache, as his heart rate soared to a dangerously fast 248 BPM, more than double the upper limit of an average heart rate, which sits between 60 and 120 BPM.
At high speeds, the human heart doesn’t always beat in a regular rhythm, and can even beat so quickly that it eventually stops – a condition which requires emergency medical attention to restore a normal rhythm, usually with a defibrillator or specialised drugs.
Despite the terrifying experience however, it hasn’t stopped Rylan from doing what he loves, with the star currently back on top form as he promotes his second autobiography, which is currently on sale now.
