Samantha Womack ‘considers’ cancer could return every day: ‘I don’t want to be in denial’

Actress Samantha Womack revealed to OK! the amazing news she's cancer-free last month – after being diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in the year.

And as she looks ahead to 2023, she talks about the prospect of the cancer returning saying she doesn't want to be in "denial."

“It’s weird because you’re cancer-free… for now. Anyone that’s had cancer will know that it will always be something you have to consider may come back at some point,” ex EastEnders star Sam explains.

“I don’t have it at the moment, but at the same time I don’t ever want to be in denial about the fact that cancer cells are really clever at multiplying, they find a way round."

She continues: “It would be crazy to say it’s not a thought that lives in your everyday brain, but it’s how that voice affects you. The truth is none of us know [what will happen].

"You just have no idea where you’re going to be in 10 years’ time. To focus on worrying would be a waste of the time I’ve got.”

Sam went through a lumpectomy and gruelling chemotherapy and is waiting to hear if she needs more preventative treatment.

“I feel really healthy, I feel really strong, and if I do have any more treatment, which at the moment is 50/50, I’ll have that later this month,” she says.

“I’ve only had one session of chemo so far and the genomic tests, which I really hope all women will [soon] be able to have, because it gives you a really clear insight into your cancer cells and how they react in your body.

“My genomic cells came back, and at the moment it’s on the fence as to whether chemo would work or not work [for further prevention], meaning I might not need it and so we’ll wait and see.”

Sam then adds she's "so grateful to have got it out and to have caught it early" so will do whatever she needs to, to prevent the cancer from returning.

“I have no fear of losing my hair – that’s OK! If I feel tired – that’s OK!" she says.

"I’m surrounded by stories of people that deal with it so elegantly. I’m determined to do the same if I can.”
