Sarah Harding’s death ‘feels more real than ever’ a year on says Kimberley Walsh
Kimberley Walsh paid tribute to her former Girls Aloud bandmate Sarah Harding on the first anniversary of her death aged 39 from breast cancer on 5 September, 2021.
Mother of two Kimberley, 40, took to Instagram to share a stunning black and white snap of Sarah as she said her untimely death "feels more real than ever".
Alongside the snap, Kimberley wrote: "Sarah passed away a year ago. I can still hardly believe it to be honest but it feels more real than ever today. Thinking of her always and of everyone who loved and miss her too."
Many of Kimberley's celebrity friends and followers rushed to the comments section to post their condolences, with actress Michelle Collins writing: "So so sad too young., thinking of you all x"
TV presenter Gethin Jones commented: " Thinking of you Kimba x," whilst former Sugababes singer Heidi Range wrote: " Sending love to you and Sarah’s loved ones".
Kim and Sarah's bandmates, Cheryl, Nicola Roberts and Nadine Coyle, have yet to comment publicly on the first anniversary of Sarah's passing.
Sarah died in September 2021, just over a year after she announced her breast cancer diagnosis in August 2020.
Her mum Marie took to her daughter's Instagram feed to announce the heartbreaking news that she had lost her battle with cancer on Sunday 5 September last year.
Marie wrote: “It’s with deep heartbreak that today I’m sharing the news that my beautiful daughter Sarah has sadly passed away," she wrote.
Marie continued: "Many of you will know of Sarah’s battle with cancer and that she fought so strongly from her diagnosis until her last day.
"She slipped away peacefully this morning. I’d like to thank everyone for their kind support over the past year. It meant the world to Sarah and it gave her great strength and comfort to know she was loved.
"I know she won’t want to be remembered for her fight against this terrible disease – she was a bright shining star and I hope that’s how she can be remembered instead. – Marie x”.
In December 2021, three months after Sarah's death, Kimberley opened up about how grieving for her had been a "daily challenge".
“I can’t lie, [Sarah’s death] absolutely knocked us all for six and the grieving is a daily challenge,” Kimberley told Psychologies magazine.
“I deal with it day to day and, for me, that’s about checking in with everyone, especially Sarah’s mum [Marie Hardman], and making sure that they’re OK too. It’s going to take time, and it’s very, very tough.”
