Selena Gomez Speaks Out Against 'Roe v. Wade' Reversal

Following the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) overturning of Roe v. Wade (the landmark case that established the constitutional right to abortion and effectively federally protected abortion access), activist icon Selena Gomez let her voice be heard on the subject.

On the red carpet for Only Murders in the Building season two, Selena took a moment from her leading actress duties to share her thoughts on the important topic with Variety and slam SCOTUS’ decision. Speaking on what Hollywood can do following Roe v. Wade’s reversal, Selena said “It’s about voting. It’s about getting men — men needing to stand up and also speak against this issue. It’s also the amount of women that are hurting.”

“I’m just not happy,” Gomez added, “And I hope that we can do everything in our power to do something to change that.”

Gomez’s comments reflect the sentiment of a recent post she shared on Twitter, in which she included a link to Planned Parenthood’s website (a fantastic resource to guide people on what they can do next to help defend abortion access on a state level) and said: “I am fearful of what will happen to those without the necessary means to have access to a safe, legal abortion.”

Selena wrote on Twitter on June 24, following the Supreme Court announcing its majority decision, “Watching a Constitutional right be stripped away is horrific. A woman should have the right to CHOOSE what she wants to do with her own body. End of story.”

This isn’t the first time that Selena has shown her support for reproductive rights. Back in May after the SCOTUS’ initial draft opinion on Roe V. Wade was leaked, Gomez was one of the 160 artists that signed a full-page ad in The New York Times as part of Planned Parenthood’s #BanOffOurBodies campaign.

“The Supreme Court is planning to overturn Roe v. Wade, taking away the constitutional right to abortion,” the ad read. “Our power to plan our own futures and control our own bodies depends on our ability to access sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion. We are Artists. Creators. Storytellers. We are the new generation stepping into our power. Now we are being robbed of our power. We will not go back—and we will not back down.”
