Serena Williams reveals Prince Harry helped her with decision to retire from tennis
Serena Williams has revealed that Prince Harry helped her with the decision to retire from tennis, after spending an hour speaking about it to the royal.
Earlier this month, the tennis pro announced that she would be retiring to pursue projects outside the world of sport – and it's now been revealed that Prince Harry was part of that decision.
Speaking on Meghan Markle's new podcast Archetypes, the pair say how they had a long chat which helped Serena come to her decision to retire – chatting for almost an hour about it.
Speaking to both Serena and Harry, Meghan explained in the episode: “I think, you know, I think both of us, or the three of us, really know that sometimes the right decision isn’t the easiest decision.”
She added: “It takes a lot of courage, I think, too, to stop something in many ways than to keep going sometimes.”
Speaking about her decision to quit the sport, Serena recently said she thinks of her retirement as more of an "evolution".
Speaking to Vogue, Serena said: "I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people. Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution."
As well as sharing the shocking story of a time when son Archie's nursery room caught fire, Harry made a surprise appearance on Meghan's Spotify podcast and complimented Serena on her hair.
During the episode, Meghan said to Harry: “You wanna come say hi? Look who just popped in.”
Meghan and Williams then greeted Harry with “Hello” in British accents, while Harry told Serena: “I like what you’ve done with your hair. That’s a great vibe.”
The tennis player replied: “Thank you. Good to see you too as always, I miss you guys.”
The duke responded: “Well come and see us," with Meghan then saying they will make a plan.
As Harry left, Meghan remarked: “Thanks my love.”
The new podcast, which is a co-production between Archewell Audio, Gimlet and Spotify, launched on the streaming service on Tuesday with its first episode 'The Misconception of Ambition with Serena Williams'.
The blurb in the episode notes said: "Meghan talks to the one and only Serena Williams about the double standard women face when they are labelled 'ambitious' and the ripple effects this has on other aspects of their lives".
"This groundbreaking premiere episode also features Dr. Laura Kray, a leading expert on gender in the workplace," it reads.
Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, was listed as the Executive Producer of the podcast.
