Singer Paloma Faith BLASTS Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid for teaching kids ‘its OK to give up your voice to love a man’

Disney has another live-action remake hit on their hands with The Little Mermaid, which took in $118 million at the box office over the Memorial Day holiday weekend… though singer Paloma Faith is seemingly not a big fan.

The 41-year-old British actress and singer took to her Instagram story over the weekend, revealing she took her daughters to see the movie during its opening weekend, but she took issue with one aspect of the story.

While Faith praised actress Halle Bailey for her performance as the title character Ariel, she was not thrilled with an aspect of the plot.

‘Just seen the new Little Mermaid with my kids, and while I think Halle gives an amazing performance and it’s great casting, as a mother of girls, I don’t want my kids to think it’s ok to give up your entire voice and your powers to love a man,’ Faith said.

‘Wtf is this s***?! Not what I want to be teaching next gen women at all,’ she added in her Instagram story post.

Faith is referring to Ariel giving up her own voice to become a human so she can be with Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King).

Of course, that same plot device was used in the original animated version of The Little Mermaid, with Jodie Benson voicing Ariel and Christopher Daniel Barnes voicing Eric.

The original 1989 animated film was credited for helping revive Disney’s animated film division, and paved the way for hits like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King in the early 1990s. 

The animated classic earned $84 million during its entire theatrical run back in 1989, a number the live-action remake has eclipsed in its first weekend.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid live-action remake took in an estimated $117.5 million in its four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The film debuted in 4,320 theaters for an impressive $27,199 per-screen average in its opening weekend.

The Little Mermaid didn’t get off to as strong a start overseas though, taking in $68 million in foreign markets for a worldwide debut of $185.8 million.

The four-day tally came in just slightly below the original projections of $120 million for its box office debut.

As for Faith, the singer recently teased she’s working on new music in an Instagram post over the weekend.

She shared a number of photos from her most recent week in the studio with a number of different artists.

‘That’s a wrap on another week in the studio with these darlings @melodicjanelle @mattmaijah @itsnymmusic @shanicesteele @martinwave’ she began.

Faith added, ‘New music is coming,’ while adding hashtags #palomafaith #workingmum #inthestudio #newmusic #recording #dreamteam #studio #funtimes.
