Sydney Sweeney has reflected on the ‘wildfire’ of controversy sparked when she posted snaps of her mother’s birthday party guests wearing MAGA-inspired hats.
The actress, 25, was accused of being ‘right-wing’ in August when she shared snaps which featured a male guest wearing what appeared to be a Blue Lives Matter shirt – and others wearing MAGA parody hats at the Spokane, Washington event.
The Euphoria star told British GQ: ‘Honestly I feel like nothing I say can help the conversation.

‘It’s been turning into a wildfire and nothing I can say will take it back to the correct track.’
In August Sweeney slammed ‘absurd’ claims regarding her family’s political ties when fans accused the actress of being right-wing.
The star, who was born in Spokane, Washington, and raised at a family-owned home in rural Idaho said: ‘You guys this is wild. An innocent celebration for my moms milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention.
‘Please stop making assumptions. Much love to everyone ❤️ and Happy Birthday Mom!’ she concluded.
Sweeney was raised in northwestern Idaho before moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting.

Many of Sweeney’s followers also took notice of several partygoers wearing MAGA parody hats emblazoned with the phrase ‘Make Sixty Great Again.’
The red hats, similar in appearance to the ones worn by former president Donald Trump’s supporters, were spotted on a number of guests in a video that the actress shared of herself dancing with her loved ones.
The actress’ younger brother Trent also shared a photo of himself posing with two hat-wearing guests to his Instagram account.
He wrote a short message in the post’s caption explaining that ‘The hats say ‘Make Sixty Great Again,” an apparent reference to his mother’s age.
Many of Sweeney’s fans took to their various social media outlets to react to the contents of her post.
‘WHERE WAS SYDNEY SWEENEY’S FAMILY MEMBERS ON THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 6TH 2021,’ one person asked on Twitter.
‘We’re really gonna witness the downfall of sydney sweeney i know her team’s going crazy rn,’ another person tweeted.
On Instagram, one user left a message in the post’s comments section and asked why the actress was ‘kicking it with people who are wearing blue lives matter merch.’

Another wrote that the alleged political views of the White Lotus actress’ family had been ‘exposed.’
A Twitter user also wrote that ‘posting photos of your family members literally wearing white supremacy memorabilia is so, so weird.’
However, many of Sweeney’s fans also came to her defense in various social media messages.
One Twitter user in particular wrote a message to the actress to express that she did not ‘have to explain anything about your family to anyone!’

One individual spoke about the phrase featured on the MAGA-esque hats, writing: ‘I could make one that’s says Make Democrats Great Again and you would still some how think it’s racist.’
Another wrote: ‘I’m angry at people’s politically ignorant reactions to Sydney Sweeney‘s mom’s bday party when they don’t realize it was country-themed. Just leave politics out of it. Sending lots of love to you and your family, Syd.’

Sweeney has been open about her admiration for her parents, and spoke about how her mother in particular helped her when she decided to take up acting during a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times.
‘I wouldn’t have been able to pursue my dreams without her supporting that decision. I was 12, 13 years old and my mom and dad gave up everything that they knew for me to be able to pursue my dreams,’ she recalled.
The performer made a point of describing how her mother and father were particularly devoted to helping her achieve success in acting.

‘I had no connections. I did not come from money…but I had parents who, no matter what, believed in me,’ she said.
Sweeney is best known for portraying Cassie Howard in Euphoria, which premiered in 2019.
The actress, who stars alongside performers such as Zendaya and Jacob Elordi, has received much praise for her work ever since the show’s debut.
