The celebrity men AND women who have had hair transplants from Jimmy Carr to Wayne Rooney

Aged just 23-years-old Owen Warner is the latest star to undergo a hair transplant.

The procedure, which can range anywhere between £1,000 to £30,000, has become increasingly popular in recent years, with more celebrities speaking out about their own hair loss experiences.

Hollyoaks star Owen put landing some of his TV roles down to his good looks but has been left ‘conscious’ of his receding hairline.

He underwent a platelet rich plasma treatments and used medication, Finasteride, to attempt to prevent losing his long brunette locks and to ‘strengthen the hairline’.

The I’m A Celebrity finalist joked he ‘doesn’t want to go down the route of Hollywood celebrities like Vin Diesel or Dwayne The Rock Johnson, who are completely bald’.

Here we take a look at other stars who have admitted to revamping their receding hairlines – from James Nesbitt to Wayne Rooney to Love Island star Rosie Williams.

The TV favourite admitted he’s had ‘a bit of work done’ to look younger, including ‘a bit of Botox’ and getting a new set of teeth.

Speaking on the Just For Laughs, Jimmy said: ‘I’ve had a lot of work done. I got my teeth knocked out and put back in.

‘And then I had a hair transplant in the lockdown, which I didn’t particularly need, but what else are you going to do in lockdown?’

Discussing his decision to undergo Botox, he said: ‘I was seeing a guy, getting a bit of Botox, and I was chatting to him and he said, ”Oh I do Simon Cowell”, and I went, ”Yeah I think I better leave”. ”What have you done… he looks like a melted candle”.’

 Wayne Rooney

Hair loss: Back in 2011, Wayne spent £30,000 on a hair transplant after going bald age 25 (pictured left after the procedure, right in 2017)

Back in 2011, Wayne spent £30,000 on a hair transplant after going bald age 25.

Sharing a photo of his head after the procedure on Twitter at the time, he told fans: ‘Hi all there’s my head. It will take a few months to grow. Still a bit bloody to. But that’s all normal. #hairwego.

‘Just to confirm to all my followers I have had a hair transplant. I was going bald at 25 why not. I’m delighted with the result.’

He later added: ‘It’s still a bit bruised and swollen when it dies down u will be first to see it. Anyone recommend any good hair gel. Haha.’

‘I had it done in Harley street hair clinic London. Thanks to all the staff who looked after me.’

Wayne’s wife Coleen Tweeted at the time: ‘Hiya!! Yes Wayne’s had his hair done! His own decision not me asking him, like alot are saying!! Pleased for him and it will look great x’.

Robbie Williams

Bid to stay youthful: Take That star Robbie, 49, had a hair transplant in 2013 and wanted to have another one in 2020 but was told his locks were too thin (left 2013)

Take That star Robbie, 49, had a hair transplant in 2013 and wanted to have another one in 2020 but was told his locks were too thin at that point for it to work.

Speaking to The Sun, the singer said he then turned to injections to stimulate hair growth but those also failed to produce the desired results.

He said: ‘I am losing my hair. When a light shines on the top of it, it becomes like a baby’s bum.

‘I went to go and have a thatch, but the guy goes, “Bad news, your hair is so thin we cannot harvest it from there. It will do nothing”.

New tactic: The singer said he then turned to injections to stimulate hair growth but those also failed to produce the desired results

‘So I had these injections. They were an absolute fortune, two vials of this stuff. It cost the same price as my grandma’s house.’

Robbie said he was told his hair would grow back much thicker but  seven months after the procedure, he had seen difference.

The hitmaker said his hair transplant procedure in 2013 was a success before his hair started thinning again in recent years.

He joked that when he is performing on stage with a screen behind him, he will look at it and see a man with ‘a double chin and no hair’.

Elton John

‘Without hair, I look like Shrek’: Sir Elton John, 75, spoke about how he had to have two hair transplants after he was left with a receding hairline in the seventies (left in 1977, right 2020)

Back in 2019, Sir Elton John, 75, spoke about how he had to have two hair transplants in the Daily Mail, after he was left with a receding hairline in the late seventies due to hair dye.

He wrote: ‘Some people are blessed with the kind of face that looks good with a bald head. I am not one of those people. Without hair, I bear a disturbing resemblance to the cartoon character Shrek.

‘My hair started thinning a little in the early Seventies, but a bad dye job in New York suddenly caused the stuff to stage a mass walkout. By 1976, there was hardly anything left on top. I hated how I looked.

‘But salvation was apparently at hand: I was directed to a man called Pierre Putot in Paris, supposedly a great pioneer in the art of hair transplants.

‘Undergo a simple procedure, I was told, and I’d be leaving his clinic a changed man.

‘It didn’t quite work out like that. For one thing, it wasn’t a simple procedure at all. It went on for five hours.

‘I had it done twice, and both times it hurt like hell.’

 James Nesbitt

Transformation: James Nesbitt, 58, has had multiple hair transplants over the years and credits the procedure for his longevity in the industry (left in 2005, right in June last year)

James Nesbitt, 58, has had multiple hair transplants over the years and credits the procedure for his longevity in the industry.

‘In terms of the range of leading roles I’ve had since then it’s probably helped,’ he previously told Radio Times in 2017.

‘It’s not cheap!’ he admitted. ‘Probably 20 grand. I went public with it. I was very happy to be open about it.

‘I just thought, “Come on, somebody is going to say it before I say it”. It was something I struggled with. And that was probably the vanity in me.’

James says these days there’s pressure among actors to maintain their youthful looks.

‘I think it’s such a shame that young men are thinking that,’ he said. ‘There always used to be the sense that age adds character.

‘You look at Samuel Beckett when he was older, Richard Harris, but I think with younger men it seems to be a big pressure.’

Kirk Norcross

Before and after: Back in February, Kirk Norcross revealed the early results of his hair transplant after undergoing the procedure

Back in February, Kirk Norcross revealed the early results of his hair transplant after undergoing the procedure earlier in the week.

The former TOWIE star, 34,  admitted that while he is ‘in a lot of pain’ at the moment, he is already ‘so happy’ and much more ‘confident’ in himself.

Taking to his Instagram on Tuesday, Kirk  insisted he hadn’t undergone the change for ‘anyone but myself’ and though his appearance still ‘bothers him’, he’s very much ‘working on it’.

He said: ‘I’m a little bit sore. Look don’t judge me, it’s a work in progress okay and I’m gonna look like this for a while but bare with me.  [sic].

‘I’m a skinhead! They’ve kept it really natural and so I’m really happy.’

Opening up on his post-op status, he admitted that he was in ‘a lot of pain’, adding ‘I’ve got a proper round head, don’t I? It’s like an egg.’

 Lee Mead

‘It’s a personal confidence thing’: Also in February, Lee Mead showed off the results of his recent hair transplant that he had in Turkey on This Morning

Also in February, Lee Mead showed off the results of his recent hair transplant that he had in Turkey on This Morning.

Lee, 41, who is the ex-husband of Denise van Outen, revealed he got the procedure done as part of a ‘personal confidence thing’.

The actor added it was the second time he’s had the procedure done, having had his first treatment for hair loss done about 15 years ago.

‘My first one was 15 years ago called FUT technique (Follicular Unit Transplant Technique). But nobody knew. Then I had my next one,’ he explained.

‘There’s nothing wrong with being bald but it was receding and it affected my confidence a bit.

‘Robbie Williams said he wanted one but his hair had got too thin so I thought I better do it sooner rather than later.

He added: ‘It’s a personal confidence thing. The operation was seven hours and you get local anesthetic for seven hours but you can hear everything going on. The team were incredible. I stayed about four days in Turkey.’

Rosie Williams

Speaking out: Last year, Love Island star Rosie Williams revealed the results of her secret hair transplant after undergoing the procedure two years prior

Last year, Love Island star Rosie Williams revealed the results of her secret hair transplant after undergoing the procedure two years prior.

The Love Island star, 31, told fans she made the decision after she didn’t ‘recognise’ herself anymore due to ‘chunks of hair’ falling out.

She has suffered with hair thinning and bald patched due to ‘years of personal stress’ which has had a major impact on her mental health.

She explained: ‘Unfortunately, over the last couple of years my overall hair health has continued to deteriorate. I can only put it down to the amount of stress I’ve been under for personal reasons.

Before and after: The Love Island star told fans she made the decision after she didn’t ‘recognise’ herself anymore due to ‘chunks of hair’ falling out

‘My hair has continued to thin and I’m experiencing bald patches, the overall hairline has completely changed shape and I don’t even recognise myself anymore.

‘What upsets me the most is that every time I wash my hair, I end up sitting on the floor in tears with chunks of wet hair in my hands that have come out of my scalp and I have no idea why.’

She said: ‘Hair loss isn’t something I would wish on anybody, It’s completely impacted my overall happiness and confidence – and following Love Island I was blessed enough to have a lovely following on Instagram that I no longer wish to share myself with because I’m so embarrassed of my hair.’

Maria Fowler

Before: In September, the TV personality embarked on His ‘n’ Her hair transplants with her fiancé Kelvin Batey to revamp and transform their hairlines

Former TOWIE star Maria Fowler, 36, has had two hair transplants, her most recent in 2018, after feeling unsatisfied with the way her hairline looked after the first one.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, the former TOWIE star said her confidence was ‘knocked’ following her first surgery, and urged fans to seek advice before splashing out on treatments.

The reality star expressed her regrets on rushing into her first treatment, stating: ‘My hairline was too straight and unnatural-looking. The first clinic didn’t use selection techniques when it came to selecting the finer strands for my hairline, and as a result, I’ve spent the last nine months feeling awful.’

Maria went on to share the negative impact of the botched procedure: ‘You don’t realise how it feels until someone in a shop is talking to you but can’t stop looking at your hairline. It really affected me, I completely regret it, but my partner’s hairline looks OK.

She added: ‘I want to stress the importance of choosing the right clinic, people need to do their research and read reviews. Although mine was for cosmetic purposes, so many men and women suffer from hair loss, and it’s a lot of money to spend for it not to look good.’

Not pleased: The reality star expressed her regrets on rushing into her first treatment, stating: ‘My hairline was too straight and unnatural-looking’

WHAT IS A HAIR TRANSPLANT AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

A hair transplant is a procedure to move hair to an area that’s thin or bald.

A hair transplant in the UK can cost anywhere between £1,000 and £30,000, depending on the extent of hair loss, the type of procedure you have, and the quality of the clinic and its team.

There are two main types of hair transplant.

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT, or strip method):

  • a thin strip of skin with hair is removed from the back of your head and divided into pieces, each containing 1 to 4 hairs (hair grafts)
  • the grafts are placed into tiny cuts made in the scalp
  • the site where the hairs are taken is closed with stitches
  • you’ll have a scar on the back of your head, but it should not be visible unless you have very short hair

The head does not need to be shaved – only the area where the skin is removed is trimmed.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE):

  • the back of the head is shaved
  • individual hairs are removed 1 by 1 (grafts)
  • the grafts are placed into tiny cuts made in the scalp
  • you’ll have lots of tiny scars, but they will not be very noticeable

Hair transplants usually take a day, but you should not need to stay overnight.

If a large area is being treated, you may need to have 2 or more sessions a few months apart.

Your surgeon will tell you how to look after your graft. You should be given a spray to use to help recovery and hair growth.
