‘The real royal family!’ Noel Gallagher swipes at the monarchy

Last night, Noel Gallagher took a swipe at the monarchy at a gig where he dedicated a song to those cast in The Royle Family. The 55-year-old was performing with his band the High Flying Birds at the Football For Change event in Manchester.

Ahead of performing one of his iconic hits, he asked the crowd: “Is anyone from here from Manchester?”

According to The Mirror, he then said: “This is for the real royal family”, as he went on to sing Half The World Away.

The song was the soundtrack to BBC comedy The Royle Family.

He and brother Liam Gallagher released the hit on their Oasis album Definitely Maybe back in 1994.

The popular programme ran from 1998 to 2012 and featured the likes of; Caroline Aherne, Ricky Tomlinson, Craig Cash, Phil Mealey, Carmel Morgan and Henry Normal.

It’s not the first time the singer has taken a swipe at the royals.

Noel is said to have been unhappy with his colleagues when they took a day off for the Queen’s Jubilee back in June.

He is quoted as saying: “The music business should not stop for the monarchy.

“Some of the people who work for me, I was like, ‘See you tomorrow’.

“They went, ‘Oh, we’re off tomorrow. We’ve got the day off for the jubilee’.

“I was like, ‘f***ing royalists in the music business?’ I’m not having the day off, you’re not having the day off’. Anyway they all had the day off.”

He went on to say the monarchy “is a bit farcical” but while he isn’t a royalist, he didn’t “hate” them.

Liam on the other hand took time off of Twitter following the late Queen’s death.

In response to a fan who asked if he was detoxing, the singer replied: “Just paying my respects to da queen in it now I’m back ready to RnR”.(sic)

In another post he said was “gutted” to learn of her passing.

Earlier this year, he spoke out on missing the Queen’s honours list again.

“What more do I have to do to get myself 1 of those SIR things oh well onwards and sideways LG x,” he tweeted.

He went on to say he’d expect the award to be delivered to his house however, as he “wasn’t bending down” for them.

“Not that I’m anti-Royals – I like the Queen.

“I think she’s like a little Jedi. She’s alright, man,” he added in an interview with NME magazine.
