Timothée Chalamet reveals unusual nickname for Hugh Grant after his Oompa Loompa debut
In the much-anticipated musical prequel titled Wonka, Timothée Chalamet takes on the role of the eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka – but he's overshadowed by a late arrival in the short clip.
The trailer for the latest adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic tale was released on Wednesday and showcases a star-studded cast including Olivia Colman, Rowan Atkinson, Keegan-Michael Key, Matt Baynton, and Matt Lucas. However, it isHugh Grant's remarkable transformation into an Oompa Loompa that has caused quite a stir online.
The Notting Hill actor’s portrayal of an Oompa Loompa, small in stature and adorned with a green wig and orange skin, immediately caught viewers' attention. Even Timothée couldn't contain his excitement, taking to Twitter to pay a quirky tribute to the renowned actor.
The 27-year-old tweeted to his 2 million followers: "HUGHMPA LOOMPA DOOPATY GRANT", cleverly combining Hugh's name with a line from The Oompa Loompa song, Oompa Loompa doom-pa-dee-do.
The tweet elicited a mixed reaction from fans, with some applauding it as a funny promotion for the film, while others found it cringe-worthy.
One excited Twitter user wrote: “best press tour in history incoming.”
Another added: “celebrities can be 2005 cringe funny and everyone eats it up i'm jealous.”
A third chimed in: “I love how Tim tweets like once every 6 months and it’s always something just like this.”
While a fourth joked: “how long was this in the drafts for.”
Based on Roald Dahl's beloved children's book, the film serves as a prequel and will explore how the eccentric chocolatier opened his famous chocolate factory.
Directed by Paul King, known for his work on the Paddington films, the trailer features a brief encounter between Wonka and Hugh's character, who finds himself trapped in a glass jar.
Wonka exclaims: "So you're the funny little man who's been following me?" to which the Love Actually star, playing one of the small human workers, responds: "I will have you know that I am a perfectly respectful size for an Oompa Loompa."
As the young Wonka encounters the people from Loompaland for the first time, an Oompa Loompa takes out an instrument and mesmerises him with a lively dance.
Timothée character labels himself as "something of a magician, inventor, and chocolate maker" in the trailer, presenting a fresh interpretation of the iconic role previously played by Gene Wilder in the 1971 classic
and by Johnny Depp in Tim Burton's 2005 adaptation of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.
In Wonka, we follow the tale of the individual in a vibrant red coat and a majestic top hat as he embarks on a quest to establish himself as a renowned confectioner.
As his journey unfolds, Wonka encounters an unexpected obstacle in the form of a formidable chocolate cartel. Undeterred, he forges an unlikely alliance with a spirited young girl, joining forces to overcome the challenges that lay ahead.
Wonka will arrive in UK cinemas on Friday 15 December.
