Emily was emotional on the set of the 2014 Hollywood blockbuster as her heavy robotic costume caused damage to her ribs, leaving her co-star Tom unsure of what to do.
She admitted that her famous co-star “didn’t know what to do”, so he instead simply offered his own harsh words of encouragement.
She and Tom portrayed space warriors who were caught in a time loop while being tasked with saving the earth and the human species.
While Top Gun and Mission Impossible star Tom is no stranger to action flicks and is known for doing his stunts, It was the first action film for Emily.
The star explained on the Smartless podcast that she had become emotional on set while being weighed down by the hefty costume.
She shared: “We had to wear these enormous suits, which I think would’ve been great if we had CGI’d them but we wanted to do it in a tactile way.
“When you hear the word tactile you think that sounds nice and cosy; there was nothing cosy about these suits.
“It was like 85lb, it was so heavy. The first time I put it on I started to cry and [Tom] didn’t know what to do.
“He just stared at me and was like ‘I know, I know’, I was like ‘Tom I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this shoot’ and just started to cry.
“I said ‘I’m feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot’.”
Attempting to diffuse the situation, Tom used the approach of tough love as Emily continued: “He just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes ‘come on, stop being such a p***y, OK?’.”
It appeared to work as the actress appeared to laugh it off and managed to make her way to continue with the scene.
The costume was so heavy that a male stunt double was needed for Emily.
She even sustained injuries during filming, hurting her ribs and collarbone while in the suit, admitting that they are “still dodgy” eight years on.
Despite the pain, the movie paid off as it grossed over $370 million, more than twice the Hollywood blockbuster cost.
Fans of the movie may not have to wait long for a sequel with both confirming it is something that they have been asked to do in the past.
She told Howard Stern: “Honestly, I think the movie is too expensive. I just don’t know how we’re going to do it.”
Emily Blunt is married to fellow actor turned director John Krasinksi with the latter starring and directing alongside his wife in A Quiet Place.
Some however feared for the beloved couple after learning they were teaming up on set, leaving many to worry about their relationship.
Emily joked: “When we decided to work together there were a lot of people who were like, ‘You’re going to be divorced by the end of the movie’.”
She also admitted being blown away by her husband’s skills as both a writer and a director.
Emily continued: “I’ve always known he was supremely talented. I was just waiting for the rest of the world to find out that he was more than Jim from ‘The Office.’ That’s a hardtail to shake.”
