William and Kate have ‘worked out’ Princess Charlotte’s role as a ‘spare’, says expert

Prince William and Kate Middleton have already "worked out" their daughter Princess Charlotte's role as the "spare", an expert has said.

The expert spoke out following the release of the Prince of Wales' brother Harry's memoir, which is titled Spare in a nod to the phrase "heir and the spare".

The 38 year old royal's autobiography discusses intimate details from his relationship with his father to playing second fiddle to his older brother William, 40, who is next in line to the throne.

While promoting the book, Harry shared his worries for his sibling's children Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four, as their elder brother Prince George, nine, is the future King behind his father.

Now, royal expert and author Katie Nicholl has claimed Kate, 40, and her husband William are raising their three children very differently to how Harry and his brother grew up.

"No one would want the next generation to suffer in the way that Harry has suffered," she shared on Vanity Fair's Dynasty podcast. "You see that suffering on the pages of his book. It's not a pretty picture for the Royal Family."

She continued: "So I think when you look to the Cambridges and how they are raising their children away from the spotlight in pretty ordinary schools in a pretty cottage in the grounds of Windsor, having bucket and spade holidays and teaching them to sail on the broads in Norfolk, actually they are enjoying a childhood that William and Harry just didn't get to enjoy.

"And I think that's why William and Kate are channelling everything they can into raising their children with that understanding of who they are as royals and as just ordinary children too."

Speaking of Charlotte as the "next spare", she added: "Of course, it does open up the question of the next spare, of Princess Charlotte. And I'm sure that William and Kate have that all worked out."

Earlier this month, Harry shared his concerns that George, Charlotte and Louis will end up just like him. And despite his elder brother making it clear that the children are not their uncle's responsibility, Harry told The Telegraph that "knowing that out of those three children, at least one will end up like [him], the spare" hurts and worries him.

In the book, Harry opened up about how the label "spare" has haunted him throughout his life, writing that he has always been aware that he was born in case something happened to his brother.

He wrote: "I was born into the world in case something happened to Willy.”

He added this was made "abundantly clear" to him from a young age and was "regularly reinforced" throughout his life. The Duke of Sussex went on to describe his life as a "mission to offer a source of distraction, entertainment and, in case of need, a spare part" – such as a kidney or bone marrow.

Harry then told an anecdote from when he was 20 and he heard a story about his father's "supposed words" to his mother,Princess Diana , on the day he was born.

King Charlesis alleged to have said to his wife: "Wonderful!You have already given me an heir and a spare. I have done my job."
