Woody Harrelson CONFIRMS Matthew McConaughey’s wild revelation they may be biological brothers and calls for DNA test
Woody Harrelson has confirmed Matthew McConaughey’s wild revelation that they could be biological brothers and called for a DNA test despite the Oscar winner’s apprehension about doing one.
The 61-year-old actor responded to the claims during an appearance on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert alongside his White Plumbers co-star Justin Theroux on Tuesday night.
Harrelson said that the lightbulb went off in his head regarding his 53-year-old former co-star possibly being his brother after a conversation with McConaughey’s mother Mary Kathlene McCabe.
He explained: ‘Well, I’ll just say there is some veracity to that thought because we talked to Ma’ Mac, Matthew’s legitimate mother, and she let us know one time…I mean, this is crazy.
‘We were in Greece watching the U.S. team win the World Cup and I don’t know, I mentioned something about regrets. And I said, “You know, it’s odd that my father has no regrets.” And I have known Ma’ Mac a long time, and she goes, “I knew… your father.” And it was the ellipses I found a little troubling, or interesting. “I knew your father.”’

Eerie resemblance! An unearthed 2019 image of McConaughey and Harrelson has added fuel to the actor’s recent claims that they could be related
Harrelson said that the thing that got him most thinking was the pause – which Colbert joked was ‘a pregnant pause’ – which he said was ‘filled with innuendo.’
The actor continued: ‘The year of [Matthew’s] birth, nine months before, she was on a sabbatical from her relationship with his supposed father, Jim.’
When McConaughey first made the revelation recently, he said that he has had reluctance over having a DNA test but Harrelson doesn’t quite have the same reservations.
He said: ‘We want to go for a [DNA] test, but for him, it’s a much more big deal.
‘I mean he feels like he is losing a father. But I’m like, no, you’re gaining a different father and a brother.’
This comes as a resurfaced image has added fuel to the actor’s recent claims that they could be related.
The Oscar winner, 53, had previously shared his suspicions that his mother Mary had a sexual encounter with Woody’s hitman father Charles, after she made a cryptic remark about knowing the late convict.
And an unearthed snap of the long-term friends Matthew and Woody, taken in 2019, shows an eerie resemblance as the pair star in Apple TV+ comedy series Brother From Another Mother.

Speaking on the Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa podcast, Matthew said: ‘In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families. And my mom is there, and she says, “Woody, I knew your dad.” Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after “knew”. It was a loaded K-N-E-W.
‘We went on to unpack what this “knew” meant, and did some math and found out that [Woody’s] dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce.
‘Then there’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering, or a meeting, or a “knew” moment.’
Matthew admitted his mother’s remark about Woody’s father, who died in prison in 2007, prompted him to investigate his family history, but they’re reluctant to take a DNA test.
He said: ‘You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been like a murky line. And that’s part of our bromance, right?
‘My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew. And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.’
The Interstellar star added in the podcast: ‘Look, it’s a little easier for Woody to say, “Come on, let’s do [DNA tests],” because what’s the skin in it for him?’
‘It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, “Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?” I got a little more skin in the game.’

While Woody’s father Charles passed away 16 years ago in his cell from a heart attack, his mother, Diane Lou Oswald, is still alive.
Charles was sentenced to life in prison for the fatal shooting of Judge Wood Jr in San Antonio, Texas in 1979, and Woody regularly visited him until his death aged 69.
Of his father, Woody said: ‘He is one of the most articulate, well-read charming people I’ve ever known.
‘Still, I’m just now gauging whether he merits my loyalty or friendship. I look at him as someone who could be a friend more than someone who was a father.’
Matthew and Woody are set to star alongside their families in the new Apple TV+ series.
The show will focus on the ‘strange and beautiful bond’ between the pair, who play themselves in the series, producers said in a synopsis.
The friendship between the Texas-born stars will be ‘tested when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas.’
Both appeared on eight episodes of the Emmy-winning HBO crime drama True Detective in 2014.
