A skincare trend called “slugging” is going viral on TikTok, with fans claiming it can help you look younger. Videos on the trend have hundreds of thousands of views online from skincare experts.
What is slugging?
Slugging means applying an occlusive to the skin at the end of your evening skincare routine. These products form a barrier, locking in moisture to the skin and stopping the loss of water from the skin overnight.
While an “occlusive” might sound fancy, in reality, it’s simply a petrolatum-based ointment and a £2.99 pot of Vaseline from Boots will do the trick.
What are the benefits of slugging?
Slugging is thought to be particularly good for dry skin, as it locks in moisture so effectively.
It also helps to repair the skin barrier, which is a key element of skin health. The term “skin barrier” refers to all the layers of your skin and how effectively they protect the skin, keeping nutrients in and harmful things out.
For those living in a very dry climate, it can be very helpful to practise slugging to keep skin balanced and healthy. It is especially good for those with dry skin or mature skin, experts say.
However, those with acne-prone or oily skin should stay well away from the trend. One such expert explained why slugging is good for older skin.
Mona Gohara, M.D, associate clinical professor of dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine, said: “With ageing comes decreased barrier repair, decreased hydration, saggy skin, and more obvious wrinkles.
“Slugging essentially acts as a buoy to the barrier, keeping water locked in and the skin plumped.”

How to do slugging on your skin
Slugging should be done at night after your evening skincare routine to lock in moisture and make your products work harder. It’s relatively simple, just follow these steps.
- Cleanse your skin as usual
- Apply your hydrating serum or moisturiser
- Apply a thin layer of Vaseline
