An Apple employee took to TikTok to share the best tips and tricks to protect your devices and avoid a trip to the genius bar. 

Karleigh, from Seattle, shared a video to her over 8,000 followers, revealing four key trips to prevent your device from a short-lived life.

Her first tip was to never leave your device by liquids or put your phone in rice; followed by her second tip, which was to periodically shut off your computer to help its memory

Karleigh’s first tip was to never leave drinks or any liquids near your devices while working. 

She added: ‘And if I ever did get liquid in one of my devices, I’d never put it in rice.’

The Apple employee explained that many think putting your phone in rice is a solution to drying out the liquid in the device, but she advised against it because she said the ‘rice can get stuck inside your phone.’

Instead, she recommended turning your phone ‘upside down or positioning it in way to let the water dry out.’ 

The second tip she shared to her followers was to periodically shut off your laptop. 

She emphasized the importance of not just letting your computer die, but rather, powering it down yourself instead. 

Karleigh added that she does this to protect the computer’s RAM, or Random Access Memory, which she notes is: ‘Basically short term memory for processes and applications that your currently using on your computer.’ 

She said that by periodically powering off your computer, it helps cause less ‘bugs or crashes,’ which is why when people often tell you to ‘turn something off and on’ if it isn’t working they aren’t joking. 

Her third recommendation to users was to keep technology away form unsanitary areas and clean all of your devices properly and frequently, noting that: ‘Bugs will crawl into your charging port or USB port.’ 

Karleigh’s final tip was to never buy a counterfeit charger, 

The Apple employee described a counterfeit charger as a charger that ‘hasn’t been certified by Apple.’ 

She added: ‘A lot of times if you see chargers that are like 20ft long and five dollars it’s because they’re counterfeit and use different technology.’ 

Per Apple’s website, the reasons to avoid using a counterfeit charger include risking damages to your device and risking damages to the cable. 

Apple also noted how to spot a counterfeit device by looking at the packaging. 

If a charger’s packaging says ‘Made for iPhone’ or ‘made for iPhone, iPad, iPod,’ then it means it has been certified by Apple and is compatible with your device.

Another way to spot a counterfeit charger is by the faceplate insert.

Apple notes that a certified charger will have ‘single pieces and rounded, smooth gold- or silver – colored contacts,’ while an uncertified charger with have ‘rough squared contacts with an uneven surface.’ 

Her video raked up over 900,000 views and users where shocked to learn that they had been ‘doing everything wrong’ 

Her video raked up over 139,000 likes and 207 comments, with users shocked at how they have been rarely following any of the Apple employee’s tips. 

‘I’ve been doing everything wrong,’ said one user.

Another user commented: ‘The way I’ve never shut my computer down and I’ve had it for a year.’ 

‘I go months without turning off my computer,’ added a third user.
