As Tatjana Patitz dies, see what happened to the other 90s supermodels

The forgotten icons of fashion: As 90s supermodel Tatjana Patitz dies at 56, FEMAIL reveals what happened to the era’s OTHER stars – whose beauty was immortalized by Vogue… only for them to vanish from the spotlight in a sea of scandal and tragedy

  • Tatjana passed away from breast cancer at age 56 this week
  • She and stars like Karen Mulder, Elaine Irwin, and Niki Taylor reigned in the ’90s
  • Also popular was Yasmeen Ghauri, Naomi Campbell, and Linda Evangelista
  • Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, and Christy Turlington were also often seen
  • As Tatjana’s death rocks the fashion industry, see what her peers are doing now

Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, and Cindy Crawford are some of the most famous names in fashion history – having achieved ‘icon’ status while dominating the industry in the 90s.

Their names are as famous today as they were back then thanks to their enduring fame and success, both within fashion and outside it.

But while these style icons have proven that true celebrity can indeed endure – what happened to the women who were once considered their peers and equals, who have since disappeared from the spotlight altogether?

In 1992, Naomi, Christy et al were immortalized on the front cover of Vogue’s 100th Anniversary Issue in what was considered a celebration – and a cementing – of their status as the leading lights of their industry.

However, these famous faces shared that honor with several other supermodel stars, Tatjana Patitz, who this week passed away from breast cancer at the age of 56, with a total of ten famous faces gracing the cover of the fashion bible.

So what became of the other 90s supermodel icons who were once held in such high esteem?

Three decades ago, it was nearly impossible to glance at a fashion magazine without seeing one of their faces or reading one of their names, yet today the likes of Karen Mulder, Elaine Irwin, Niki Taylor, and Yasmeen Ghauri have all but disappeared from the spotlight.

During the ’90s, supermodels like Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Karen Mulder, Elaine Irwin, Niki Taylor, Yasmeen Ghauri, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, and Tatjana Patitz’s faces were plastered everywhere

As the modeling industry is rocked by the death of Tatjana (seen in 1992), who passed away from breast cancer this week at age 56, FEMAIL revealed what happened to her stunning peers

For some, it was a tale as old as time: a struggle to find work which eventually led to them falling off the grid and vanishing from the limelight.

Some of the former ’90s style sensations were even plagued with scandal and controversy in later years – facing run-ins with the law, multiple marriages and divorces, and drug use.

One of the former fashion icons tragically saw her modeling come to a screeching halt after she got into a severe car accident in 2001, which left her fighting for her life.

She suffered from severe internal injuries – like a collapsed lung and liver damage – needed to have steel rods put into her back to hold her spine together, and was in a coma for six week.

Another decided to go into ‘hiding’ after a botched cosmetic procedure left her face ‘brutally disfigured’ and ‘permanently deformed.’

From the fashion legends whose careers certainly stood the test of time and are still making waves in the industry today to the style icons who traded in the world of elite parties and glamorous trips for a much quieter lifestyle, here’s what your favorite ’90s supermodels are up to now.

Karen Mulder

Throughout the ’90s, Karen (seen in 1995), now 52, stomped the runway for big brands like Valentino, Yves, Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, Versace, and Giorgio Armani

Throughout the ’90s, Karen (seen in 1995) also modeled for Victoria’s Secret, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Revlon, and Chanel, and she even got her own doll in collaboration with Hasbro

However, in 2000, Karen announced she was retiring from modeling. She then briefly pursued other endeavors, like acting and music, instead. She is seen in 1998, two years before retiring

Karen, 52, originally from the Netherlands, got involved in modeling at age 15, after she saw an ad for Elite Model Management’s Look of the Year contest in a newspaper.

She ended up coming in second place and was signed by Elite Paris, and within two years, she was stomping the runway for big brands like Valentino, Yves, Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, Versace, and Giorgio Armani.

But in December 2002, the former model attempted to take her own life by overdosing on sleeping pills. She is seen in 2000

She made her first appearance on the cover of Vogue in 1991, and landed a contract with Guess that same year.

Throughout the ’90s, she also modeled for Victoria’s Secret, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Revlon, and Chanel, among others.

She even got her own doll in collaboration with Hasbro, and released her own CD-ROM that featured her sharing makeup, beauty, and exercise tips.

However, in 2000, Karen announced she was retiring from modeling. She then pursued other endeavors, like acting and music, instead.

Unfortunately, neither career took off – she starred in the French short film, A Theft, One Night, in 2001, but that’s about it, and she released one self-titled album.

In the early 2000s, Karen allegedly claimed during an explosive interview with a French TV program, which never aired, that she had been raped by various members of Elite Model Management.

Soon after, it was reported that she was going to spend time at a psychiatric hospital, due to chronic depression and drug use, where she stayed for five months.

But in December 2002, the former model attempted to take her own life by overdosing on sleeping pills.

A neighbor ended up finding her passed out on the floor of her Paris apartment, and she she was rushed to the hospital, where she spent one day in a coma.

She thankfully recovered, and in 2007, she briefly returned to modeling when she walked the runway in a Dior fashion show.

Karen was married to photographer René Bosne from 1988 to 1993. She was engaged to real estate developer named Jean-Yves Le Fur (seen)  from 1993 to 1997

But in 2009, Karen faced more controversy when news hit the web that she had been arrested in Paris for allegedly threatening to attack her plastic surgeon. It is not known what the outcome of the charges was.

She later spoke out about her time as a model, and she admitted that she started to ‘hate being photographed’ soon after she started in the industry.

‘For me, it was just an assumed role, and in the end, I didn’t know who I really was as a person,’ she recalled.

‘Everybody was saying to me, “Hi, you’re fantastic.” But inside, I felt worse from day to day.’

As for her love life, Karen wed French photographer René Bosne in 1988, when she was only 20, but they split in 1993.

She was then engaged to a real estate developer named Jean-Yves Le Fur for many years, but they went their separate ways in 1997.

She welcomed a daughter, named Anna, in 2006, but it is unclear who the father is.

Linda Evangelista

By the time she was 19 years old, Linda (seen in 1991) had already become one of the most well-known models in the world

She has modeled for Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, NARS Cosmetics, Fendi, Hermes, Christian Dior, L’Oreal Paris, Prada, and Moschino. She is seen in 1990

Linda, 57, originally from Ontario, Canada, started modeling as a teen in her hometown.

In 1981, she took part in the Miss Teen Niagara beauty pageant, where she caught the attention of someone from Elite Model Management.

By the time she was 19 years old, she had already become one of the most well-known models in the world.

In 1998, however, Linda announced that she was retiring from modeling, and spent two years living a normal life out of the spotlight near the French Riviera.

However, in 2001, she returned to the modeling world when she posed on the cover of Vogue magazine.

After that, she was back with vengeance, modeling for Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, NARS Cosmetics, Fendi, Hermes, Christian Dior, L’Oreal Paris, Prada, and Moschino throughout the 2000s.

In 2016, she was also named the creative director and vice president of Erasa Skin Care.

But later that year, she stepped away from the spotlight after a botched cosmetic procedure left her ‘permanently deformed’ and ‘brutally disfigured.’

The model spent the last six years ‘in hiding’ after suffering from a rare reaction to the procedure known as CoolSculpting, which was designed to decrease her fat cells, but instead, made them become enlarged.

During the procedure, which has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a device that’s set below freezing temperature is applied to fat deposits, which causes cell death in the tissue.

But weeks after, Linda developed a condition called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia – a rare adverse effect of cryolipolysis, which has been reported in of 0.0051 per cent of the 1.5 million CoolSculpting procedures performed worldwide.

With this condition, the treated area becomes larger, rather than smaller. It can leave a ‘painless, visibly enlarged, firm, well-demarcated mass’ underneath the skin.

Linda said on Instagram that she developed ‘bulges’ all over her body after the surgery, which left her ‘unrecognizable.’

Speaking to People magazine in 2021, the former runway star detailed how she thought she was going crazy and ‘stopped eating’ when the growths started to appear on her chin, thighs, and bust area – and said she now ‘dreads running into someone she knows’ after spending decades as a catwalk sensation.

The model told the outlet at the time that she can no longer bear to look at herself in the mirror – since ‘it doesn’t look like her’ – explaining that her identity as ‘Linda Evangelista, supermodel’ is now ‘gone’ due to the condition.

She added: ‘If I walk without a girdle in a dress, I will have chafing to the point of almost bleeding. Because it’s not like soft fat rubbing, it’s like hard fat rubbing. [I can’t] put my arms flat along my side. I don’t think designers are going to want to dress me with that sticking out of my body.’

She has since undergone two liposuction surgeries in an attempt to fix the problem, and she announced back in February that she was done living in ‘shame.’

She recently returned to modeling – and she looked flawless as she posed on the cover of British Vogue’s September 2022 issue, during which, makeup artist Pat McGrath had to use tape and elastics to pull her jaw and neck back, which she covered with scarves and hats.

At the time, she explained that she is still ‘trying to love herself’ after becoming ‘so depressed’ following the faulty procedure, and that using the tape ‘took care of’ her ‘insecurities’ so that she could feel confident while ‘doing what she loves to do’ again.

Linda was married to the head of Elite Model Management’s Paris office, Gerald Marie, from 1987 to 1993.
