Britain’s Got Talent’s biggest scandals through the years from tears to fix scandal
Since Britain’s Got Talent launched back in 2007, the UK public and the rest of the world have seen their fair share of talent.
From Paul Potts to Diversity and Susan Boyle to George Sampson some of its winners have gone on to enjoy incredible success.
However, it's not just the sheer brilliance of the acts that people watch the show for. Many tune in for a bit of a giggle or simply to check out what kind of drama the judges or the contestants will bring.
So, with that, let’s take a look at some of BGT’s biggest scandals and controversies over the years…
Jules & Matisse
Arguably the biggest ever Britain’s Got Talent scandal came back in 2015, the morning after Jules O’Dwyer and her dog Matisse won the show’s ninth series.
It was revealed that during the final, Jules hadn’t used Matisse, but another one of her dogs, Chase, to perform a tight rope trick because Matisse was afraid of heights.
The discovery led to over 1,150 Ofcom complaints, with many complaining that they had been misled about the act. Especially due to the fact that neither Ant, Dec, or Jules mentioned that Matisse would be swapped out for the trick both before the final performance or after they’d won.
When Simon gave Amanda an inappropriate kiss
Back in 2013, some viewers were shocked when Simon Cowell planted a kiss on fellow judge Amanda Holden’s bottom.
It came after 71 year old Kelly Fox took to the stage to perform her rendition of Kiss My Ass.
While some found it hilarious, others weren’t so impressed, and called Simon out for inappropriate behaviour due to the fact plenty of children watch the show.
A member of the National Association of Headteachers even spoke about the kiss, describing it as something “no mum or dad with an ounce of morality would want their child to see.”
The heartbreaking moment Hollie Steel cried on stage
Many BGT viewers will remember the sweet 10 year old Hollie Steel, who took the judges by surprise with her incredible voice at such a young age.
However, during the semi finals back in 2009, the youngster broke down in tears while singing Edelweiss for her place in the final.
Asking if she could start again, Hollie was told that they had run out of time, and she wouldn’t be able to give the song another try. Eventually, Simon intervened and allowed her to perform at the end of the show.
Despite Hollie being given a second chance, the show still caused controversy, as many accused the show of exploiting the youngster.
Hollie ended up speaking about the traumatic moment 10 years later, saying: “Before I went on to do it… I didn’t have my mum backstage and it was a bit like, this is new to me, it was live as well which was new to me."
When Simon got egged
Some found it funny, some didn’t, but isn’t that kind of the definition of controversy?
Many will remember back in 2013 when Natalie Holt, a member of the BGT orchestra, put down her violin and pelted Simon Cowell with some organic eggs.
Apparently, she did it because she thought that the 63 year old had “too much power and influence in the entertainment industry”.
Natalie launched the eggs during contestant Richard and Adam’s performance at the final, and quickly apologised to the pair for spoiling their big moment.
