What can we expect from today’s awards?
Evoking the timeless glamour of Grammys past, today’s celebration will beam in live from, um, Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, with comedian Trevor Noah on hosting duties. If you remember last year, the show leaned away from awards and more towards countless, endless, non-stop performances. For better or worse, that’s likely to happen again.
On the bill are performances from Harry Styles, Lizzo, Bad Bunny, Steve Lacy, Luke Combs, and Sam Smith and Kim Petras, and a few tributes to the year’s dearly departed – with Kacey Musgraves honouring Loretta Lynn; Sheryl Crow, Mick Fleetwood and Bonnie Raitt remembering Christine McVie; and Quavo performing in memory of his Migos bandmate Takeoff, who was shot dead at 28 last November.
Personally, I’m looking forward to the 50 years of hip-hop tribute, curated by Questlove. If it doesn’t include Will Smith, winner of the Grammys’ first-ever rap trophy, getting slapped onstage by the 2Pac hologram, it’s a real missed opportunity.
As for who’s in the running, Beyonce leads the field with nine nominations, followed by Kendrick Lamar with eight, and Adele and Brandi Carlile, who have seven each.

It’s time to live blog the 2023 Grammys
Hello, it’s Grammys day! Or as I’m going to call it, B-Day. As in Beyonce Day. Because this will either be a day full of record-breaking Beyonce wins, or it will be a day full of heavy booing. Booing also starts with B and so, again, B-Day.
My name’s Robert Moran, I’ll be leading the live blog today because someone’s made a terrible mistake. But you’ll also be in the excellent hands of national fashion editor Mel Singer, who’ll be guiding us through the red carpet looks, and reporter Billie Eder who’ll be adding insights and updates throughout the day.
Like last year, the show’s been split into two – the broadcast proper, which kicks off at noon, and a pre-show ceremony, where awards are already being given out – so let’s not waste time here.
If nothing else the Grammys are always hilariously unpredictable, as though the awards are secretly run by a bunch of nefarious Cirque Du Soleil clowns who love nothing more than tricking future generations into believing that, say, Macklemore was the most significant rap artist of 2014. But that’s all part of the fun. Whatever happens, this should be… something.
