How much should you spend on wedding gifts? Let us know your thoughts
With wedding season finally upon us, many Brits face the dilemma of how much to spend on a gift to mark the special occasion.
Planning a wedding can be expensive, but even attending as a guest can be costly.
Ocean Finance revealed the average cost of being a wedding guest is £541.90 – this includes a new outfit, somewhere to stay, drinks and, of course, a gift.
With the cost-of-living crisis causing financial strain on UK households, splashing out on a wedding gift can be tricky for those on a tight budget.
The amount you spend depends on how close you are to the bride and groom, with close family members opting for a more extravagant present.
Personal finance experts claim acquaintances and evening guests are expected to spend around £20 to £30 on the new couple, while gifts from all-day guests should reflect the cost of the wedding meal – in the region of £50 to £100.
Meanwhile, the typical amount to spend for immediate family members, or bridal party, is also £50 to £100.
Sarah Neate, Editor in Chief at Ocean Finance said: “You don't need to spend a fortune to show how much you care, and opting for a personalised or handmade gift (Etsy is great for this!) can be a thoughtful and affordable way of celebrating the newlyweds."
